Anybody end up grabbing a copy of The Dark Carnival? Was on the fence as I do love Bradbury and only have a few of his LEs, but I decided to pass. $225 price (more like $250 after shipping) is just a bit too high for me for this book. I still might have considered it, but after seeing that SubPress is publishing this with an 8x8 trim size, it was an easy pass for me. Didn't enjoy the feel of that trim size when they used it for Hill's Full Throttle as it made the book a little awkward to hold when reading. Would have much rather seen the trim be oversized such as what Thunderstorm does with their BV books. Oh well, my wallet can use the break anyway.

I bought it a few weeks ago when they sent an email to people who'd purchased a previous Bradbury book.

It's definitely going to be an expensive year for books. CP has the remaining three Dune books, 2001, Ringworld, and the new edition of the 'Salem's Lot movie book.

I decided to pass as well, though with not a small degree of regret. I'm sure it'll be a lovely volume, but the logical/Gauntlet argument I made to myself below just ultimately won the day.

I received the email as well, and while I am mulling it over, I'm trying to stay strong and pass on it. I already have the numbered and slipcased Gauntlet HC that's signed by Bradbury and Clive Barker, and has the chapbook of "Time Intervening," one of the add'l stories in the Sub Press edition. Other than being a lovely new variant of a great collection, I don't see what it offers that is better than what I already have, and I don't have room on my shelves for multiple variants of the same title.

That's the logical side of my brain...the other side has very different ideas. So we'll see how this battle shakes out.

I'm passing on this. Akin to swintek's comment, the budget is a big factor. I really need February to be a slow month. Like you, I'm not a huge fan of the 8x8 trim and that fact did make it easier to pass on.

It's killing me, but I have to pass as well. Just too many expensive books coming out left and right lately. But, I will say that I think it looks great! Dave McKean can be a little hit and miss for me, but, here- his work looks wonderfully suited to the book. And, I'm the other way on this trim size- love it! I thought Full Throttle was the book of the year when it came out (Hey, another wonderfully illustrated 8x8 book by McKean- maybe that's his Magic Ratio, or something). Hopefully grab one down the road sometime.

Yes, and as such I got the impression Barry wasn't too pleased with the upcoming Sub Press edition, since the Gauntlet edition was intended to be the one and only exception to Bradbury's hardfast resistance. From what I recall of interviews with Bradbury, he preferred the stories from CARNIVAL be remembered in their slightly revised/polished versions in THE OCTOBER COUNTRY.

Bradbury's estate apparently has different ideas.

But given that that genie had already been let out of the bottle and the Gauntlet edition was so long ago, and the one-time exception was upheld in Bradbury's lifetime, it's hard to argue that a new edition of CARNIVAL shouldn't be published.

That's the impression I got, as well. I don't know where I land in the argument--or if where I land really accounts for much anyways--but I can see where Barry is coming from since he had a personal engagement with the author himself. I guess all that being said, Bradbury could've ensured that CARNIVAL was never republished by providing some kind of stipulation in his will for his estate to follow. But, then again, maybe Bradbury only cared when he was alive.

Anywho, I doubt I'll be pulling the trigger on this edition if any copies are still available. I'm not a Bradbury enthusiast and the price tag is steep. I just can't swallow $200+ book after $200+ book.

I ordered the story collection grab bag, here's what I received:
The Secrets of Insects by Richard Kadrey
Maelstrom and Other Martian Tales by Kage Baker
Ragged Maps by Ian R. Macleod

I borrowed Secrets of Insects from the library and read it a couple weeks ago. I really enjoyed the collection and was planning on buying a copy at some point, so this one worked out well for me. I'm not familiar with the other authors or collections though.

I would not have minded this haul at all!

I borrowed Secrets of Insects from the library and read it a couple weeks ago. I really enjoyed the collection and was planning on buying a copy at some point, so this one worked out well for me. I'm not familiar with the other authors or collections though.
