I'll let ya know what it's like from the perspective of someone who hasn't read the book as soon as I get a chance to watch it. Hopefully this weekend.

Spoiler! It was almost as if they took key parts and made those the scenes, and in doing so it was like taking all of the meat out of a hoagie. It just was no longer complete. And, being a love story as Srboone mentioned, I didn't buy into the 12 second love story that had been built up without the relationship to Mattie's daughter helping to fuel it. I understand the need to change some things for sake of the movie, but they went way too far, and butchered it to the point that it was no longer even a valid story. I mean, that ending was horrid. It just felt rushed.Last edited by ozmosis7; 12-14-2011, 03:15 PM.

I was pretty let down by it. My biggest concern before the film came out was the cast, but I was actually surprised there, especially with Melissa George. She looked the part more than I ever thought possible.
I agree that it was rushed, though. Very little was established in terms of character. Mattie seemed to be in it hardly at all, as well as her grandfather Max. I also found the first half to be rather slow moving, and it really left out what I thought was the best part of the novel, the way Max Devore had the entire town under his control, and the legal battle being waged over Kyra was way too short and without much drama."Phnglui mglw nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah nagl fhtagn!"

Whenever I decided to watch a King adaptation (feature film, mini-series, or otherwise), I lower my expectations to about Earth's core level. Usually, I'm not too badly disappointed, but I always prefer the written work to the filmed work. Based on the reviews of Bag of Bones, I'll stick with my memories of a favorable reading of the book in late 1998 with the distinct possibility of a re-read when I can catch up with the 3+ shelves of previously unread books I have collecting dust."Do or do not.
