Not a movie, but I'm four episodes into the new The Haunting of Hill House on Netflix. I'm a big Mike Flanagan fan so watching this was a given even though I'm not a big fan of reinterpretations of older works. So far, I'm really enjoying the show. There's a lot of heart mixed in with the scares and the cast has been uniformly great. I have a big urge to just binge the remaining six episodes, but the time before Halloween is tight and I have thirteen more movies lined up so this is probably try to squeeze in another episode or two but won't finish it until after the holiday.

We finished this up last night and loved it! I've never read the book and didn't care for the modern movie. Flanagan should just write, produce, and direct everything! Beautifully done. Makes me really excited for Doctor Sleep.

The modern movie was horrible. The original movie is a classic.

Was Vincent Price in the original? I may be seen that years ago but don't recall it very well. Maybe time for a revisit. The music in the Netflix series was amazing as well.

Drama and a slower paced movie.

Vincent Price does not star in the movie but if I remember correctly his voice is used at the beginning. He stars in an earlier file The House on Haunted Hill, that if I remember correctly is similar but not based on the book.

Ah, gotcha. That's the one I'm thinking of.

That's what I had thought. Thanks!

Good to hear that the show maintains it's quality throughout. I've heard some minor rumblings about complaints regarding the ending, but you know the internet: somebody is always complaining about something.

I truly believe that if Mike Flanagan continues with the quality he has already shown, he will go down as one of the new masters of horror. His stuff is so well crafted EVEN when it has absolutely no right to be (here's looking at you OUIJA: ORIGIN OF EVIL).

I didn't have a problem with the ending but I'm a bit of a hopeless romantic. I can understand that some folks would want it a different way.

Just watched Episode 5 "The Bent-Neck Lady" last night. So, so good...and that ending. Dear God.

                          Halloween viewing has commenced:

A Quiet Place: This was a rewatch, but I absolutely love this movie. I don't have any issues with the premise that others struggle with and thought that the emotional core resonated as well the second time around as the first. Grade: A

The Fly: Cronenberg's remake is a masterpiece of economy of storytelling. It's been probably 15 years since I watched this one and I thought it held up very well. Yes, the fashion and designs are very 80s, but the performances by Geena Davis and Jeff Goldblum are fantastic. Any discussion about this movie is going to touch upon the effects which are still some of the best practical effects in my opinion. Such a great film with a lot more heart than we typically see from Cronenberg. Grade: A

Unsane: Steven Soderbergh's output is always hit-or-miss for me, but I can always appreciate his craftsmanship. His latest flick--filmed entirely on an iPhone--about a young woman who is duped into checking herself into a mental hospital after expressing her trauma of being stalked is interesting, yet failed to reach it's full potential. The first half that centers more on if our protagonist is crazy or not is infinitely more interesting than the second half when the questions are answered and the film slides into the traditional thriller arena. As for the iPhone gimmick, it works, but there is a noticeable difference in video quality. Overall, it was okay. Grade: C

The Strangers: This is another film that I haven't seen in a long time, but have been wanting to revisit and, for the most part, it holds up well. For a film that came out during the "torture porn" era, it is surprisingly light on gore with more of an emphasis on atmosphere and building tension and suspense. Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman were never my favorite actors, but they do provide a nice emotional core to the film that adds gravitas to the brutal proceedings. Grade: B+

The Strangers: Prey At Night: What a misfire. This felt like a movie that was made by someone who heard what the original movie was about and decided to make a film based on that. The disintegrating relationship between a young couple is replaced by a family that is having to take their daughter to boarding school and the confined setting of a house in the first film is substituted with a trailer park that is mostly abandoned since Labor Day has passed. Neither of these changes makes for more compelling movie. There are nice callbacks to the first film, but overall this is standard slasher fare that misses the point of the first film entirely. There was one point where I thought the movie might make a turn and give us something more daring, but the movie cops out. A couple of good jump scares do not save this film. Grade: D-

Some good movies there and I generally agree with your assessments, though I haven't seen The Fly for years, probably decades.

I've been to Halloween (2018) twice in the past week. The first time because I thought my buddy would flake so went Friday. Then went again when he actually followed through on his commitment to go Tuesday. Halloween 1978 is the first horror movie that I remember seeing, this was when I was 8. It has been a favorite since and I was looking forward to the new film, especially when the reviews were so positive. I watched the original a couple times in the past few weeks after I got the 4K disc. So, with the first viewing I was a bit critical of the new film, I was fine with some things, other things bugged me. I enjoyed it more the second time but there are still things that I would have changed to make it better. I do think it's a lot better than most of the sequels and reboots, which probably isn't saying a lot considering some of the installments. Overall, it was a pretty good movie, just need to overlook some things.

Does this show start moving a little faster after the first 2 episodes? It is really slow so far.

I tell myself I'm a horror fan, but I rarely ever read horror novels or watch horror movies. (I think what I really am is a Stephen King fan, and he may not really be horror HORROR anymore.)

Knowing that, we (GF - I mean WIFE - that'll take some time to get used to!) never watch scary movies.

I think was year we watched the original Halloween (on glorious Divimax DVD!) and she was fine. She barely made it through IT when we saw it in the theater - but bonus points for actually going with me.

This year we watched A Quiet Place - thought it was great and it was pretty scary at times. We also watched The VVitch - and that was a great movie - and a bit frightening (oh you beautiful thing you Black Phillip!) Last night we watched Oculus - it's Halloween time and I suggested a scary movie. I hadn't seen any of the Blumhouse horror films, but I enjoyed this one. Had it's moments of fright, plus Karen Gillan is always alright to watch ( <3 ). K said she was disappointed
                                Spoiler!

I think the most "horrorific" film she's watched with me is Rare Exports. Early on in our dating life we went and saw it. I had already seen it (a little arthouse theater here plays it every December) and she was a bit concerned about what was going on, but was a huge fan at the end.
