eBay fee percentage just went up to 14.35% for books...

...making Books, DVDs, and Music the least profitable items now to sell.

Figures. I just started selling, so much like I make it rain right when I wash my car, I can only assume this is entirely my fault.

    *** EDIT: ***
Okay, maybe it's not as onerous as I thought...it appears PayPal will no longer be involved in payments, so there is no longer a 3% add'l fee. Instead, eBay is handling all payments, and the percentage fee is subtracted immediately, and the funds are deposited directly into your bank account (no more PayPal balance harbor). So instead of 10% or 12% + 3% PayPal, it's just a straight 14.35%...or essentially no difference. Sorry for the confusion. More info:

Ouch! I never planned to retire off of eBay or anything, but it was nice to make a buck or two off of items that were just collecting dust.

But they keep making it harder to want to sell stuff on eBay!

Guess I'll just stick to trying to sell stuff on Facebook...

eBay charges different fees based on what you are selling?

Yes. Different group types are charged different percentages.

And I should clarify that the increase appears to take effect 1/1/21.

Yikes. I haven't sold on there for years but that seems excessive. What was the previous mark-up if you don't mind me asking.

Currently most items are 10%, books are 12%.

Look here under Final Value Fees for categories and percentage fees for each:

Thank you. It was interesting that yesterday, when I signed into my account and looked, it directed me to the new fee schedule.

14.35% is ridiculous. Couple that with the fact you also pay Final Value Fees on the shipping and that PayPal still takes their cut, it's hard to make any money off a book. In fact, with that new percentage, you'd have to sell the book at 20% over what was you paid for it just to break even. I'm going to have to rethink my selling practices.

If I list anything in the future I will have to really think about pricing. Last time I sold a few books I lost money with shipping so this makes it a little more challenging for a novice seller.

I do wonder what the logic is for charging different rates. It is not like it costs eBay more for people to sell books.

Well, that makes it a little easier to swallow.

Yeah, what happened there? I was surprised to see this news a couple days ago...as far as I knew, they were still one outfit. I take it eBay sold PayPal (or vice versa)?

Looks like you can still pay via PayPal, but can also pay via other methods (which apparently eBay handles on the backend)...I just updated my info w/ eBay as required from all sellers (by end of year), and I see this list of payment options:
