Anybody end up grabbing a copy of The Dark Carnival? Was on the fence as I do love Bradbury and only have a few of his LEs, but I decided to pass. $225 price (more like $250 after shipping) is just a bit too high for me for this book. I still might have considered it, but after seeing that SubPress is publishing this with an 8x8 trim size, it was an easy pass for me. Didn't enjoy the feel of that trim size when they used it for Hill's Full Throttle as it made the book a little awkward to hold when reading. Would have much rather seen the trim be oversized such as what Thunderstorm does with their BV books. Oh well, my wallet can use the break anyway.

It's killing me, but I have to pass as well. Just too many expensive books coming out left and right lately. But, I will say that I think it looks great! Dave McKean can be a little hit and miss for me, but, here- his work looks wonderfully suited to the book. And, I'm the other way on this trim size- love it! I thought Full Throttle was the book of the year when it came out (Hey, another wonderfully illustrated 8x8 book by McKean- maybe that's his Magic Ratio, or something). Hopefully grab one down the road sometime.

I'm passing on this. Akin to swintek's comment, the budget is a big factor. I really need February to be a slow month. Like you, I'm not a huge fan of the 8x8 trim and that fact did make it easier to pass on.

I decided to pass as well, though with not a small degree of regret. I'm sure it'll be a lovely volume, but the logical/Gauntlet argument I made to myself below just ultimately won the day.

I received the email as well, and while I am mulling it over, I'm trying to stay strong and pass on it. I already have the numbered and slipcased Gauntlet HC that's signed by Bradbury and Clive Barker, and has the chapbook of "Time Intervening," one of the add'l stories in the Sub Press edition. Other than being a lovely new variant of a great collection, I don't see what it offers that is better than what I already have, and I don't have room on my shelves for multiple variants of the same title.

That's the logical side of my brain...the other side has very different ideas. So we'll see how this battle shakes out.

I bought it a few weeks ago when they sent an email to people who'd purchased a previous Bradbury book.

It's definitely going to be an expensive year for books. CP has the remaining three Dune books, 2001, Ringworld, and the new edition of the 'Salem's Lot movie book.

I'm not trying to be uncouth talking about price but not being into watch culture I'm unable to ascertain the veracity of the information I've seen looking into the watch after your post. Are the prices I'm seeing online correct in that it runs somewhere between $1800 to $2500?

Yes, $2500 MSRP from Hamilton, but you can pick one up for less on the secondary market. It's actually very well made, with a nice beveled sapphire crystal, and comes in a nice display case.

Thanks for the clarification/confirmation. From the pictures, it looks like a beautiful watch. No doubt it looks even better in person. I have a nephew who’s into watch culture and has taking me browsing with him and I had a lot more appreciation for high-end watches than before. There is a level of craftsmanship that can be very beautiful.

Congratulations again on the watch. It’s hecka cool and I’m sure as a Dune fan it’s nice to have a high quality watch that also incorporates the love for the book. Thanks for sharing!

Oh, you bet, I haunted that place for years, though was able to get through it with only a few purchases (and one sale). I could feel my restraint starting to crack and weaken, though, and the normalizing of concepts like low four-figure watches as being barely acceptable as daily beaters. That was when I knew that particular sandbox wasn't one I should play in, that it'd turn to quicksand someday and suck me in, leaving an Omega on my wrist at some point. Between expensive books, motorcycles, and watches, some hobby had to give. So I stopped visiting WatchUSeek and Watch Recon cold turkey and have been pretty good about staying away.

I have a bit of praise for Subterranean Press. I generally avoid ordering signed trade books from small presses as I have heard horror stories about the time it can take to get the book in hand. I decided to break my rule for the latest TOR release from John Scalzi. I decided I would order the signed book and be content with the first read being via Audible only. Well, the book was scheduled for release this last Tuesday and I received a shipping notice last week. Well they managed to get it to me on release day! I am not thoroughly enjoying reading about the time the moon turned to cheese! Love Scalzi's writing and 'WHEN THE MOON HITS YOUR EYE' is another fun read!
