I brought up this idea on the Rate The Last Movie You Saw thread, but haven't gotten around to getting a thread started until now.

I always thought that to truly discuss a movie one would need to tread into the realm of spoilers, hence this spoiler-filled den of discussion. I figured the easiest way to browse this thread without inadvertently spoiling movies you haven't seen yet would be to list the title being discussed, then put the comments in a spoiler tag. This way, one could browse the thread for discussions about MOVIE A and not worry about ruining MOVIE B.

There's been a lot of questions about the movie and motivations of the characters but, at least for me, there were a couple of moments that were pretty clear markers of what was going on. It is my thought that essentially Riley Keough's character, Medora Sloane, killed her son because he had sociopathic tendencies like his father, Vernon Sloane, (as hinted at in a flashback showing the father and son talking about how it felt to kill when hunting) with the son potentially being the source of the other two children that have gone missing. Vernon Sloane's violent tendencies were known from his childhood with the discussion of he being taken to be "healed" of this issue and these were passed along to his child. As to why Medora Sloane would kill her child, it wasn't to stop the damage her son was inflicting to the community, but rather to protect herself and her husband and maintain the good of their "pack" as Medora and Vernon Sloane weren't just lovers, but also brother and sister as hinted at during her comments about not having any memories without Vernon (this point is made more explicit in the book from what I hear). Medora's desire to have Russell Core hunt and kill the wolves could either be viewed as an attempt to cover up the murder of her child or that she secretly wanted him to find out it was her and possibly kill her as in the scene where she appears naked with a wolf mask on and proceeds to have him choke her. In the end, Vernon's vengeance is held back as he realizes why Medora has done what she has done and they flee with their child's body in tow.

I think I got more enjoyment out of your post than I did the movie. None of that was clear to me. I'm almost tempted to rewatch the film armed with this knowledge. Thanks for sharing.

THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE

Wow, what an excellent miniseries. In a year without GAME OF THRONES, this really filled the gap by providing a deep, thoughtful, creepy epic that also managed to zig when you expected it to zag, while subverting the usual genre tropes. I wasn't scared, but a few episodes just broke my heart and filled me with an almost unbearable sadness, especially for the Crane children in their younger years. The scene where Nell says "I was right here...I called and called, and no one saw me. I was right here, and no one saw me."......wow. As a father, I was devastated. And the scene where the house speaks to Olivia masquerading as her children, and Luke asks if she will still love him if he spends years injecting poison into his body to try to escape the darkness he's seen in the house....Jesus. Dark, depressing stuff. Being a parent really changes how you see things like this. It also has probably THE best jump-scare I've ever seen. You'll know it when you see it. My wife was laying down on the couch, and she kicked me so hard in the hip that I thought she broke it. "Uuuugh, you and these FUCKING shows!!!"

My wife didn't like the ending.....she felt it was too abrupt, and didn't deliver after all that had come before. I agreed that it wasn't what I was expecting, but I was pleased with how it wrapped up. I've seen plenty of movies that end with people running around the haunted house screaming and avoiding vengeful spirits while the house collapses/burns around them. The quiet, thought-provoking ending was in my mind all day today, and that's pretty high praise.

On the non-spoilery side, THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE was an brilliant viewing experience, and I highly recommend it.

I went to Pet Sematary 2019 last night. I'm curious what other have to say about this one. I think if I didn't know the source material I may have enjoyed it more. I didn't mind some of the changes which were already made apparent in the trailers, but by the end.....hmmmm.

I really need to check this out. I'm torn about the significant change they made, but have no reference as I've yet to read the book. (I know, I know, but I'm waiting for the CD edition for my first read.)
