Late Night with The Devil

I reupped with Shudder last night so I could catch LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL, a new found footage (kinda) film starring David Dastmalchian, who plays a 1970s late-night talk show host who plans a special Halloween episode that he hopes will finally help him dethrone Johnny Carson. His big guest is a thirteen year old girl who is the sole survivor of a Satanic cult's mass suicide, and may or may not be possessed by the demon that they worshiped. Things do not go as planned...

For the most part, I enjoyed the film, and it was well worth the seven bucks Shudder charges per month by itself. Dastmalchian was great, and the 1970s vibe was authentic throughout. The ending is a bit constrained by the inherent predictability of found-footage films, but  overall, a good time.

You and I must have it upon the same wavelength because I, too, renewed my Shudder subscription yesterday to watch this movie. To be honest, my renewal was past due and the only reason why I let it lapsed was because I had previously renewed it through my Roku, but unbeknownst to me, there is glitch that occasionally happens with Shudder where it gives the user an error upon trying to log in and supposedly the only way to fix this is to uninstall and reinstall the app. Since I had renewed through Roku, the machine would not allow me to uninstall the app, so I had to wait for the subscription to expire and renew through Shudder's website. While I was going to renew anyways, LATE NIGHTgave me the motivation to do it yesterday.

All that being said, I really liked the movie. That should be tempered with the knowledge that I have a sweet spot for found footage/mockumentary horror films and those about cults and possession, so the film may have a lower bar to clear for me than others. The movie wasn't a clear homerun for me as some of the effects didn't quite work for me (though the manifestation involving the demon at the end did very much so), but it was such a great ride. Dastmalchian--who I've enjoyed in everything I've seen so far, including THE SUICIDE SQUAD--is great in the role and I hope this leads to even bigger things for him. The movie actually did very well at the box office considering its limited release making over $10 million dollars. If this ever gets released on Blu-Ray (and Shudder realizes that, at least for the horror community it serves, a physical release doesn't diminish streaming and vice versa), I will be adding it to my collection.

I actually saw it in the theater and enjoyed it as well; my buddy loved it.

I keep hearing about people having a problem with the movie using AI for the three title cards for the late night show that were made in a '70s theme.

To me, if that's the only thing you can complain about, it's a damn good movie.

I've been reading about the complaints. How the hell did anyone even KNOW they were AI generated? As someone who whose job is in line for AI assimilation, I get the frustration, though.

Dastmalchian has a few volumes of a Horror comic that he created/writes for Dark Horse Comics. I gave it a pass, as celebrity-written comics generally suck, but I'm going to place an order for them next week. Clearly the guy is a genre fan. (He also hosted the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards on Shudder, so....He's one of us.)
