I am not completely against remakes. For one reason only, people my age or younger often find it hard to watch older movies for one reason or another. Personally its the quality for me and sometimes the acting. A remake gives a whole new generation the opportunity to see a classic movie. Unfortunately, most of the time they end up seeing something COMPLETELY different. Remakes have potential but today's hollywood just ends up ruining it in one way or another while trying to please people of my generation or the next. and often people my age do love these remakes...usually I hate them though.

As Gus Van Sant's shot-for-shot remake of Psycho proved, a remake needs to be something different. One of the best remakes I can think of is the '78 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. While the basic story was the same, the theme changed from the Red Scare fears of the 50s to the 70s issues of paranoia and identity issues."Dance until your feet hurt. Sing until your lungs hurt. Act until you're William Hurt." - Phil Dunphy ("Modern Family"), from Phil's-osophy.

Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds was better than the original, though mostly it was the spelling of "basterds" that links the two. 2006's Casino Royalewas better than the original. David Cronenberg's The Fly was better than it's 1958 original. I think you can add Evil Dead 2 to the list also."I'm a vegan. "

I didnt watch the second one cuz I thought the first was stupid. It was one of those movies I wished I could have those few hours of my life back. It was the First and only Quentin movie I had seen at that point and I didnt like the EP of CSI he did So Im like I hate that guy. But I liked all of the others I have seen. Reservoir Dogs is one of my favorite movies.

As long as nobody tries to remake "Pretty in Pink"...
Hate to say it, but the original "Carrie" never did much for me. I think it's because of the overall style of the 70's, which to me was just horrible - but that's what you get when everyone did acid in the 60's. Ha ha.
I guess things never do change, though; I can see how they think a remake would fit in today's "I'm awesome and you suck" entitlement culture.

I already ranted on page about my feelings regarding remakes BUT I do admit to liking several:
The Fly(already mentioned. Cronenberg took it to a whole other level)
Dawn of the Dead( they changed the story enough that I could get onboard)
The Thing(Carpenter ruled this! and so did Bottins effects)
Halloween(nope not better than C's version but unlike many, I enjoyed seeing Mike's backstory)
So, this being said, I am not totally closed minded to the fact of remakes, just most of them turn me off.

Even only certain parts of the shining were good to me. Mostly the classic parts you think of when you think of the shining. I didnt see the tv versions of either though which I may have been the target audience for given when they were made. I have no idea if they're good or not maybe I will watch them soon actually no. I haven't read carrie yet So I think i'll hold off until I do although it's not like I dont already know the ending.

I thought the Green Mile had an excellent cast and didnt find Hanks out of place. I agree with Shawshank but also found 1408 and most of all I LOVED the cast for Secret Window. I have not yet read it though so Johnny Depp could be all wrong for kings idea of the charactor(s) but as a stand alone, fantastic. Two things I love, Stepen King and Johnny Depp. I'd love to see Sam Rockwell used, my second favorite actor. I can't think of a character at the moment but he is awesome so I'm sure there is a few he would be perfect for.
