Ya know, I've just heard about this, but it seemed Wikipedia blacked itself out yesterday and now all across the world, high school students failed their midterms because Wikipedia is where they got all their info on...stuff. Sometimes I think it's not a bad idea--make students actually learn something on their own instead of having it spoon fed to them.

Maybe it was just the schools I was in or the teachers I had, but when I was in school they didn't let us use Wikipedia as a source when writing papers. As the information can be submitted by anyone and there really isn't a whole lot of fact checking involved.

The problem with SOPA and PIPA is that it doesn't require site to remove violating content, it requires sites to be shut down for it. For instance if someone posted something on this message board that a company believes is in violation of copyright law, and I don't catch it, all of CD's web sites could be shut down for something that could be as simple as a picture being posted. There's also no due process, it's the site gets shut down, then they can fight it in court all while they are shut down.

And I believe that copyrighted material would include all of the pictures that we've posted of our collections. It's just wrong.

The good news is that all this uproar has caused previous supporters in the government to change their minds.

I think taking a stand against those supporting this crap would be a good idea, though difficult. How would the movie companies feel if a majority of regular movie-goers decided to take a stand and not go to see a movie for a week or an entire month? Or if a large amount of people that purchase music stopped doing it for a month?

Do I think those things will happen? No, not very likely. Would be very interesting to see what the corporate response would be to them though

Good. If it passes then the courts if they do their job, should rule it unconstitutional. I'd be very surprised if it would get through the Republican House. It seems nowadays only Dimocrats like censorship.

In this case case I don't think it has much to do with Democrats or Republicans. I don't think either really know much about it. I think it's more of who's getting the most campaign money from those that do support it. Even if it does pass the congress, I seriously doubt that it'll make it past the White House as they've been pretty much firmly against it from the beginning.

The problem is that there are laws already in place to protect IP. What they're trying to do is find a way to shut down "foreign" web sites. But instead of making the laws so that they can only be used against foreign websites they are blanketing all websites. If it's a US based site that is infringing copyright law, there are already laws in place to force the offending website to remove the offending content. There's really just not a whole lot that can be done about websites based out of countries that don't recognize US Copyright law, that doesn't cross a "censorship" line that I don't think anyone really wants to cross.
