Black Mask, Under the Hood (Batman)

I really dig the Random thoughts thread (thanks srboone!). The quote was stuck in my head like a song, but this will probably help.

I just watched the animated adaptation of Under the Red Hood. One of my favourite of DC's animated films. I just love the Joker. He always cracks me up.

Ha, yep, I've liked pretty much all of the DC Universe animated stuff I've seen. For the most part they've done a great job, though I've fallen behind on the more recent releases. Black Mask was always an interesting villain for his business-like approach to crime. He didn't seem sadistic like many of the others in the universe, just after full control of the empire.

I always found it a bit weird that, in general, animated DC is top-notch while animated Marvel is serviceable at best, while live-action Marvel is top-notch and live-action DC is serviceable at best.

Well you could say that for the Superman films recently, but Nolan's Batman and The Watchmen smoke every Marvel film IMO. Though I do like the Captain America films. I actually generally prefer DC's animated to Marvel's live action too, they mostly just feel soulless and manufactured to me.

I'm one of the strange people who wasn't that impressed by the Nolan Batman films. For me, if you take the plot of a man dressed up like a bat to fight crime TOO seriously it ultimately renders the whole thing even more ridiculous. You need a bit of humor, an acknowledgment to the innate humorousness of the set up, to balance. For my money, Burton's Batman Returns was the perfect blend of dark and camp. But again, I know I'm in the minority.

Dammit Gunnells this time you've gone too far.

Kidding, of course, the Burton films were great, but I loved the first Nolan Batman best. I thought the fury emanating from Bale's performance as Bruce Wayne was better for the character than the intensity emanating from Keaton's, though Keaton gave a great performance. But this character is mad. Really, really mad, and I feel he's less of a stretch when you consider his actions based on this level of focused anger.

I got into the comics of the character with the late 70's Ra's Al Ghul Demon books, but when Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns was released I thought the character hit perfection. And as far as I had seen he was at that point angrier than he'd ever been. I think it's because of Miller's take that the Nolan Batman films are my favorites.

See, you're just thinking of the big dogs. What about Green Lantern? Or Jonah Hex? Or Steel? Or (*groan*) Catwoman? At some point, the sheer terribleness of the bad movies begins to eclipse the quality of the good movies.

The one you found on google is probably the same one on his computer, as that's where we found it as well.

Edit: It should be this one.
