When did CD drag you in to the Dark?

Spring of 1992, a friend of mine — Darrell Schweitzer — suggested I might send Cemetery Dance some samples of my illustration work. Rich Chizmar responded by sending me three stories — "Shell" by Adam Fusco, "Hitchin' Through The Wall" by Augustine Funnell, and "The Washingtonians" by Bentley Little — to illustrate, which ended up in Issue #14, Fall 1992. I remember subscribing to the magazine many, many years ago. I assume it was in the 1980s but can't recall. I'm not sure if this is a phantom memory, but I think I received a solicitation through the mail (physical mail, obviously) asking if I would like to subscribe to receive news on Stephen King. In every issue, there was a King column by I want to say Tyson Blue? I may have that wrong. Now of course it is Bev Vincent. But, I may have received the solicitation because I was a subscriber to the Castle Rock newsletter, and then when that went out, maybe the address list went to CD. I really don't know, I may not have any of this correct, but I recall something coming my way saying CD was the way to keep up on King. Nowadays unfortunately I have not kept up with the magazine as much as I would like, and I don't have many issues still in my collection, but I hope to correct that situation at some point (I did order some stuff a few years back, plus some individual issues).

If anyone can confirm that my memory is correct on this, please let me know...

I began bought a lifetime subscription starting with issue 32 in 1999. At that time Tyson Blue had a regular column called "Needful Kings and Other Things".

I'm very new to the whole CD thing, but I have dived in the deep end.
I bought a copy of Gwendy from Amazon and was curious about this Chizmar fella. Google brought me here and I bought the recent double issue of the magazine and subscribed for 6 issues I think.

Inside the mag there was an advert for a fancy looking edition of Carrie. I had always bought first editions of King books (so I could read them immediately) but didn't realise there was this other market of special editions from small presses. I ordered Carrie and much to my chagrin, I soon found out that I had missed out on Salems Lot and the Shining.

eBay to the rescue. I paid ridiculous prices for those two (being the ignorant fool that I was). I have since found better ways to get what I "need". One of the most frustrating things about CD's books for me is that the postage usually costs more than the book, so I have to take that into account. In the past few months I have become obsessed and have added more than a few CD titles to my shelves.

I realised that I already had two CD titles prior to Gwendy - Six Scary Stories, and Lilja's Library - both from Amazon. I was particularly struck by what a beautiful little book SSS was. I have even bought a couple of Sub press titles, and 19 books from Brian (through this forum). I can't get those yet because the postage would nearly bankrupt me. I'm going to NYC in Jan, and will collect them then and escort them home personally.

Now I'm a member of CDCC and seem to be adding titles weekly.

I'd heard about Cemetery Dance for a while, but it wasn't until I started thinking that there had to be more to the genre than what I was finding on the shelves at Borders (remember them?) and I bought a copy of the magazine from the website. I then received a special coupon as a new customer or something and bought another magazine. After that there was a 50% off sale and, if I remember correctly, I picked up Picking the Bones by Brian Hodge, Wicked Things by Thomas Tessier, and Kin by Kealan Patrick Burke. This was quite a splurge at the time, but after I received the books, I was all in.

Sidenote: I remember reading a paperback edition of From The Borderlands (Borderlands 5 in HC) and my favorite story (yes, beating out King and Little) in it was "Answering the Call" by Brian James Freeman (maybe just going by Brian Freeman at the time?). I remember at the time trying to locate other work by this new author and couldn't find anything. Flash-forward more than a few years and I'm being helped by Brian via email with some issue or another and it clicks into place in my mind that this is the author of that story that I absolutely loved a few years back. I kinda had a mini-fanboy moment, after which, I composed myself and expressed my appreciation of that story to Brian as a postscript in one of the emails. To which, Brian was very gracious in his response. It was a cool little moment since this had been the first time I'd ever been able to express appreciation about a story to the author. I'd figured since we were sharing CD memories, I'd throw this one in!

Huh, didn't think Borders was still around at that point. I specifically remember roughly all of those books coming out, that was maybe my 1st or 2nd year working here.
