I had not heard of Simmon's passing until this post, so thank you for sharing. While not everything Simmons wrote resonated with me, I counted him among my favorite authors and I'm sorry to hear the news of his death.
I was really sorry to see this yesterday. He always came off to me as an affable guy, brilliant but very down to earth. I had the pleasure of meeting him twice at two different book signings/readings. On the second one, several years ago, he and I had a pretty good conversation regarding his Joe Kurtz series, his Parker homage, a discussion I still think of and smile. He mentioned during our talk that there was/is a fourth Kurtz novel that Mulholland had and was supposed to publish…but now obviously never did. No idea why, but it’s a shame…maybe someday it’ll see the light of day. I really can’t think of a popular modern genre author with such a breadth of variety in their work: from outright horror to epic SF (HYPERION quartet, etc.) to crime (Joe Kurtz trilogy) to historical thrillers, and so on. Really a tremendous loss, both as an author whose work was almost always satisfying and as an example to the publishing industry that the best authors can't and shouldn’t be pigeonholed.
