      Hey Menace,

I'm with you on Orson Scott Card, and I certainly think of him as a top-notch Sci-Fi author. You may have already come accross it, but just in case I should mention that Mr. Card has written some of the more horrifying prose I've ever read, found within the collection Maps In A Mirror. I mean this mostly in a good way, too, although I found a couple of the stories burned into my brain and will never let go. In case you missed this collection from him, and only part of it is horror, it might be worth checking out if you want to see such a talented author go scary.

For favorite non-horror authors I'd have to go with:

      Ayn Rand
      Dan Simmons (does he count?)
      Orson Scott Card
      Michael Chabon
Paulo Coelho (this is just for The Alchemist, but damn...)
      Ernest Hemingway
      Terry Brooks
      Tolkien

Bugen and Menace you both like Orson Scott Card along with many others on this post. He sounds like someone I should reading. I dont like Sci-Fi. Is there something you 2 or anybody else could recommend.

Mike I've been a fairly heavy reader my whole life, and for the last 2 years have ramped it up something fierce, and in all this time I'd be hard pressed to say I've ever seen Card's Ender's Game actually beaten. I once convinced my little brother, who hates reading, to read this book and he's thanked me ever since. If I were to recommend a Sci-Fi book to someone who doesn't enjoy Sci-Fi, this would be the one.

          First sentence:
"I've watched through his eyes, I've listened through his ears, and I tell you he's the one."

Mike88: One sci-fi author I think everyone should read is Arthur C Clarke - his sci-fi has lots of real science behind it, and it isn't overly outlandish, and usually doesn't involve war (which is good!). I recently read 2 of his books, and they are short, and fast flowing (Childhood's End and The Songs of Distant Earth). Why does sci-fi always have to be space wars or military in space???? Also, a good sci-fi read (with lots of potential real science) would be Mars by Ben Bova - I found this at a donate $ for charity and pick a book off the table, at my wifes bank. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Clarke wrote mostly in the 1960s-1980s, but much of stuff is still relevant to today (not outdated).

I know I posted earlier in this thread, but I want to add James Rollins and Clive Cussler to my non-horror list, as well as Clarke.
