Book Valuation?

Is there any collector out there astute at appraising book value? I've collected for a few years and never really thought about value. However, I'm going to be moving across country and either A) need to liquidate some books B) insure the collection.

If anyone is interested, I'll either send a spreadsheet or copy the files into the thread

I imagine the best way is to investigate the secondary market. Check out what the prices are like on Ebay, and what they sold for in the recent past. You can check other sites too, Amazon also sells used books, though prices can be pretty skewed there.

Abebooks.com, alibris.com and completed sales on ebay are your best bet. It can be surprising to see what people are paying. I'm currently filling the gaps in my John D. Macdonald collection, and some of the older books are very expensive on the secondary market, but many of them are being released as ebooks by Amazon this year, so I'm just waiting 'til June for some of them.
