I added Brian's free eBook to deals.woot.com for the last day of the sale (would've done it sooner if I had realized I could.... doh!). If you guys would be so kind as to give it a plus one that'd be great! Thanks.

Read the first story in the collection last night. Very good visuals, nice smooth dialogue, good story. Looking forward to the rest.

I was really pleased with this collection of stories. I think my favorite was The Punishment Room, I found that had a nice little twist and a very interesting concept.

But, in A Dreamlike State, something about this part of it said something to me personally.

"Years would pass and he'd forget the Dark Country, but the nightmares wouldn't end and peaceful sleep would never return, not even after he fled the valley and the town where his personal demons roamed like Gods."

That is brilliant. Is it okay that I quoted that?

Not a bad story in the bunch. The stories are in no way related but the general theme's of the stories go well together. I moved right from Seven Stories to Kealan Patrick Burkes The Grief Frequency. This book is in line with the stories from Brian. Both really good reads.

A Dreamlike State is part of a much longer work, and that has always been one of my favorite lines. Thanks for posting it!

Any plans for the longer work to be available? I would like to know the rest of the story.

Maybe next year. Due to a lot of old projects finally getting done at the same time, I have seven books coming out this year so I think people are going to be pretty sick of me by December.

The story is part of a novel that got shot down by New York -- every editor my agent tried loved it, but they all wanted it to be something different than what it was, so they couldn't sell it to the higher ups. (Probably not enough -- or any -- glittery vampires.) Oh well. I still like the novel the way it is.

The short story "The Silent Attic" tells another part of the story, which is referenced in "A Dreamlike State."

To further expand on that answer, part of the reason I put those two short stories out there was to see if there was any interest from readers in this story. I've played around with other ideas for getting the book out there, like a free serial on my blog, but this book is not a gripping "thrill a minute" page turner... it's a slow build, heavy on character... So it might not be ideal for that sort of treatment.

(Most of the editors wanted "more excitement" in the first 100 pages, which I couldn't figure out how to provide... it's just not that kind of book. Either the reader will find the characters and their personal mysteries/demons engaging, or they won't...)

I know the large publishers do not like these type of novels but I for one love them. I will be picking up The Silent attic to learn more of the story.

Thanks, hope you like it! The story is told from two points of view, and these two stories show you each of them. If you like these stories, you'd probably like the novel.

I'm going to download the rest of the story to my Kindle.

Thanks for all that insight. I know authors hate to be asked, "where do you get your ideas?," but every story does have a seed to begin it and I really like hearing about the process. Maybe the story ends up being something totally different than that initial seed, but there is an idea nontheless, and it does have to be sparked. It's not just an immaculate concept. Something or someone sparks that idea. Every story has a story on how it became what it is.

So, if you care to share where the seeds of these stories came from, I for one would love to hear more.

The Glittery Vampire of Hogwarts. I smell a best seller, and I don't like the smell.
