Ron Howard's doing this one right? He usually does pretty decent movies.

Yeah, it's Ron Howard. I agree that he can make decent movies, but I don't know if he is up to the task of bringing The Dark Tower to the big and small screen and doing it justice. After watching him butcher The Da Vinci Code I find it very hard to trust him to stay true to the story. Maybe he did a better job with Angels & Demons, but I doubt it especially since I saw the movie billed as a sequel even though Angels & Demons was published first and The Da Vinci Code was technically the sequel (not that I blame him for it being billed as such, that was probably done by people above him).

I didn't think the da vinci code was a bad movie, but I also didn't read the books. I try very hard not to compare movies to the books they where made after.

I've said before (not sure if I have said it here before though), I probably would have found The Da Vinci Code to be decent or even good if I hadn't read the book shortly before then. I sat in the movie constantly being annoyed with the changes from the book, some probably done to be more politically correct. I like Tom Hanks but he wasn't right for the role, they just wanted that big name. If I hadn't needed a ride home from that movie I probably would have walked out and may have even asked for a refund it was that bad. I'll probably watch Angels & Demons at some point though, especially now that it is not fresh in my mind. Might even watch Da Vinci again at some point since that isn't so fresh in my mine anymore.

Movies can be done faithfully to the source material though. The Lord of the Rings movies were done very faithfully. Not perfectly of course, but at that point those were the closest I had seen to the books they were based off of. The Road was also done extremely close to the book as well, even more so than The Lord of the Rings even I feel.

I think Lance Henriksen would be an interesting choice for Roland. Talk about intensity! I'm not sold on Russel Crowe (or Ron Howard, for that matter), but if the movie ever hits the big screen I'll be there no matter who the creative team is.

Not quite, check the update. There is till hope! I'm actually happy Warner decided to let it go, i think if MRC picked it up they could do a much better job.

Agree. The thing is the world of THe Dark Tower is so big that you can add things that only inhance the story. The comic series got a bad wrap at times for not following the books. But the added stories only have only made Roland stronger as a character.

If MRC takes it over though does that mean HBO is out? Or is the HBO thing a done deal regardless of who does the movies?

Here's an update on The Dark Tower project. It's still not going forward yet, but there is an interesting bit on the casting of Eddie Dean in the article.

Saw that before and think he'd likely be perfect for the role of Eddie. I still hope it doesn't get made, at least not as they are planning to do it. I don't see it as something that will really translate well to the big screen. I'm a gluten for punishment though and would definitely watch it if it happened though.
