At HPB this morning i was able to get a pb copy of arrion Comfort by Dan Simmons.

This will be my first Simmons book and it is on the slate for this year sometime.

I also got a 1st US HC of Baudolino by Umberto Eco.

I've read it, but the 1st US HC was one of the those "when I get around to it" acqusitions.

The only copy of Baudolino I had was a 2nd print Australian HC I picked up in Freemantle, Austrailia. The thing is twice a thick as the US HC, but weighs only 25% of what that one weighs. Cheap cardboard and paper stock. I do like the cover, tho.

Finally, I picked up a copy of a book that I have multiple copies of. It's on my TBR, but I don't know when (an if) I'll get around to it;

I also have a 1901 "Player's Edition" with B&W photos from the first ever stage production of Ben Hur, courtesy of (you guessed it) my book-loving Grandma. It's falling apart, but all the pages are still there.

The Ben Hur book is very cool, not many books receive the care needed for them to survive that long

Normally I don't like owners names in my books but that Ben-Hur is a cool edition and the handwriting is real nice. I wonder when fancy hand writing like that (calligraphy?) went out of style.

Who knows. But there have always been calligraphers who would write inscriptions like that in books (have to make a living). Of course, with handwriting being removed from the schools, just handwriting itself could become a lost art.

Congratulations, sr! The Ben Hur is fantastic! You'll like Carrion Comfort, I'm sure. I find Simmons' writing mostly very appealing.

I recommend Summer of Night.The Terror is my favorite but Summer of Night is a great read.

It is. All of Simmons'books are. Except for Drood. I was really looking forwards to reading it, but unfortunately I found it rather dull.

Started reading it last night. Suffers from the same problem of superficiality that The Tommyknockers had. But Rose is a more sympathetic character. That helps a little.

I really like your new additions. The inscription in Ben Hur is pretty darn cool.
