I haven't run across much analysis of that particular pulp niche, but I do have one that might be along the line of what you're looking for...

UNCOVERED, The Hidden Art of the Girlie Pulps, by Douglas Ellis. Adventure House, 2003, oversized HC. It's a fantastic collection, though text/history does take a fairly sizeable backseat to the full-color art...not a bad thing and there is some history included, but do be aware it's more an art book than a history analysis of this pulp niche.

I once had a small book focusing on the work of one artist from that general era which I enjoyed, but I did not keep that book. Thanks for posting this Ron--I really do appreciate it, I am looking for something more history oriented. I'm not surprised there appears on the surface to not be much printed history about these magazines. Cap

Speaking of pulps, if you haven't seen it, the Pulp Magazine Archive on Archive.org has scans of over 11,000 pulp-era magazines.

A very deserved mention — thanks, Hunter. I drop by there from time to time, and the reserve of material they have is just incredible. Easy to get lost for hours if you’re not careful.

After being nominated to do so, I’m starting a seven-day challenge of showing off vintage noir covers. If that’s your thing, I’ll give the links here for the first two days, and those interested can keep an eye on my Twitter account for the next five covers.

I’ve always liked the look of the COVER lettered edition. I have to admit I have never read anything by Laymon.

Was pretty excited to receive this recently…a first-edition hardcover of Jack Finney’s debut novel, 5 AGAINST THE HOUSE.
