    Duotrope going to paid service

I don't really use this site (browsed it a couple times many months ago, that's about it though) but saw a post on Facebook regarding this, so I thought I would pass it along here. Starting Jan. 1 most of Duotrope's features will not be available without a paid subscription!

I don't use duotrope very much, but I do recommend it to new writers. $5 a month seems fair for the service, but there are still plenty of free ones out there. Anyone on facebook is more than welcome to join the open call group that I have started. It's called Open Call Horror Markets.

Yep I saw this as well. It's a nice service but going from $0.00 to $50.00 seemed a bit drastic. Good luck to them.

I would have to agree. I've never really used it, but now I likely never will. True, the cost may not be a boatlad of money, but as I would imagne most writers are not well off, and most likely not selling even that much in a given year thanks to the site, seems like a losing bet to me. If it were $25 I might be more likely to make use of it, but oh well.

I know I use it every freakin' week and now I'll have to let it go. 50.00 for this and 60.00 for HWA dues and the cost of all the books everyone has with a story in it or coming out soon... WHEW! This is getting expensive trying to become an established writer of fiction, brothers and sisters.

I use it all the time, and will be paying the $50. I don't think $4.16 a month is much to ask. That's about a pint of beer up here in Chicago. If you don't use it a lot, sure, not worth it. But if you do, then I don't think the fees are out of line. A lot of people disagree with me, though. I hope their listings don't get pulled, hope it stays a valuable resource. Maybe $20/year would have made the transition easier.

I'm with you Richard. People get upset about having to pay, but it is a valuable resource. Worth the money if it helps them continue what they do.
