Don't feel bad, I only had two horror books on my top 10, Ghost Story, The Shining; and someone else appreciates Lolita (my number one as well). Nice list.

I agonized over this list and the only one I'm certain of is No. 1, will probably feel differently about it later but for right now...

    10. Finnegans Wake (yes, I actually read it cover to cover and I love it for what it is, great bed-time reading)
    9. In Cold Blood (recent stories in the news would suggest it is closer to fiction than previously thought but either way it is amazing)
    8. Moby Dick
    7. Blood Meridian
    6. The Sound and the Fury
    5. The Catcher in the Rye
    4. Catch-22
    3. Crime and Punishment (Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky translation, would probably be Brothers' Karamazov but I've only read the dry and too-literal Garnett translation so far)
    2. The Great Gatsby
    1. Lolita

So many others feel left out like Huckleberry Finn, A Game of Thrones, Harry Potter and Sorcerer's Stone, 1984, Metamorphoses by Ovid, The Metamorphosis and other Stories by Kafka, Hamlet, Nine Stories, sheesh I need a thread for TOP 100 I think, not too mention a separate one just for Horror

    In alphabetical order by author:

Kealan Patrick Burke - The Master of the Moors
    Simon Clark - Vampyrrhic
Umberto Eco - The Name of the Rose
    Ray Garton - Ravenous
Jack Kerouac - On the Road
    Stephen King - Needful Things
Richard Matheson - What Dreams May Come
    Anne Rice - Violin
    Peter Straub - Under Venus
    Kurt Vonnegut - Cat's Cradle

These are books that all made an impact on me for one reason or another, and they all still resonate with me. I'm sure that I forgot many more books that deserve to be on this list, but because the titles above appear here, they're right where they belong.

Hard list to compile. At first, I thought, Sheez... I have read 10 books, haven't I? The I start ticking them off in my head, and I think, How can I choose only 10??

I'll go with these, but I can't order them. The order would probably change daily, anyway, based on my mood.

    To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee
    The Boys from Brazil, Levin
The Silence of the Lambs, Harris
    The Stand, SK
    Dracula, Stoker
    The Short Stories, Hemingway
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Lewis
    All the King's Men, Warren
Education of a Wandering Man, L'Amour
    On the Beach, Shute

Like to see love for The Sword of Shannara!!!

After a standard, but not unentertaining, beginning (about 300 pages), Brooks takes off on his own flights of imagination and the result is a highly enjoyable fantasy yarn.

Kelset is an extraordinary creation and is one of my favorite characters in all of fantasy literature.

In no particular order, except for the first book…

    CARRION COMFORT by Dan Simmons
THE GREAT AND SECRET SHOW by Clive Barker
    THE SHINING by Stephen King
SWAN SONG by Robert R McCammon
SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES by Ray Bradbury
    BLACKBURN by Bradley Denton
THE EXORCIST by William Peter Blatty
THE HYPERION novels by Dan Simmons (I’m counting 4 books as 1 here)
THE DEAD ZONE by Stephen King
    TWILIGHT EYES by Dean Koontz

I could have ended up with several more Simmons novels and a few other King as well.

I'm sorry, Tom, but Herbert doesn't even come close to what King does.
It has been years since I read on of his (Herbert's) books, so maybe I should get re-acquainted with him.

Rats I remember well - lots of blood and guts, no substance, though.

I just fouund TDOTT bogged down by too much description and explination at times, especially with Susannah's part. In comparison i love the action with the wolves and the mystery of the stolen children in DT 5

And The Drawing of the Three is the worst one in my opinion, still great but not the best
I at least gave you the benfit of the doubt on Herbert's books as I've never read anything by him.

But TDot3 subbing for 'Salem' Lot would be acceptable. But Dot3 the worst? Compared to The Wolves of the Calla?

So, just leave out one of Herbert's books and place W&G where it belongs!

Negative, Ghost Rider. Remove The Hobbit and give The Drawing of the Three it's due place of honor!
