Well, his B-day is not on the forum calendar, but if Wikipedia is to be believed (shudder), then today is....

.....Ronald Kelly's Birthday!:D

So, Ron, me and some of my friends (and yours, too, I think; they were so excited!)

1984

made you a cake! Enjoy!

Happy Birthday, Ron!

Happy Birthday Ron

I like those pictures, lol! Spider's don't bother me at all. I saw some very large spiders when I was in South Korea for a short time in the Army, including some of their gigantic webs that were bigger than I am at 5'5"! No matter their size though, they do NOT like having cigarette smoke blown at them, lol ;)

It all stems from Ron's story "Housewarming" in his Cumberland Furnace collection (the Bad Moon book--I don't know about the audio collection). Creepy!

Thanks, Peter. We went out to eat last night (I had lasagna!), but today I'm just hanging out at the house with the wife and kids. Watched a few movies and took a nice nap (that's what you do when you're 52, right?). At supper I'm going to dig into a huge homemade German chocolate cake!

Funny, I wrote one of the Cemetery Dance Be A Star stories for a lady in Australia and it was about spiders. Apparently, alot of folks have a fear of eight-leggers.

BTW, "Housewarming" will be in the audio version of THE SICK STUFF, while my Cajun spider tale "The Web of La Sanguinaire" will be in Dark Dixie II, both coming from Crossroad Press and Audible.com.

Well, maybe not, but I have a feeling you're better off having quit, lol. I'm better for quitting (cold turkey, with no cravings except one despite smoking about 10 years) just over 5 years ago. Besides, I doubt the spiders in MO get as big as the ones I saw in Korea so you should be fine. It was pretty funny seeing how fast those things could move though, even the really fat ones, lol

Mr Boone, why post a picture of a Huntsman (about as harmfull as pair of granny's 2nd hand knickers) - we get one, two, three of these a year in our house - they come in for one of two reasons:

1) there's an impending thunderstorm or prolonged wet weather;
2) to die.

Since Connie and I moved to Parramatta, we've had two come stay with us, both, unfortunately, for the latter purpose.

Both have been named Boris - (I & II) and both have perched up on the bedroom wall, stayed there a couple of weeks, then .. well, the next thing is it's dead :(

Grant Wootton
11-21-2011, 06:01 AM
Now, we do have two spiders down here that are actually scary (ie- unlike the Huntsman, they bite, and can be fatal).

No 1 - The Funnel Web spider

2003

His bite causes creeping ulcerations of the skin, difficulty in breathing, profuse sweating, intense pain, violent convulsions, loss of consciousness and .. finally .. death

Oops, sorry that was Alice Cooper (well, Vincent Price, actually) - for those that weren't a teenager or young adult in 1975, do yourselves a favour and check out "Welcome to My Nightmare".

People here have died in the past, although an anti-venom has been available for years now - still, being country born and bred, I still bash my shoes against a solid surface before putting them on - they like warm, cosy places :p

11-21-2011, 06:02 AM
Well, I didn't have time to run it by you last night; besides, all three of these pics popped up when I googled "fiddleback spider". That's why I shudder when I think of Wikipedia being an authoirty for anything.

Grant Wootton
11-21-2011, 06:13 AM
All I can say about this little sucker is best expressed in the song written about it yonks ago

2004

There was a redback on the toilet seat,
When I was there last night.
I didn't see him in the dark,
But boy I felt his bite.
I jumped up high into the air,
And when I hit the ground.
That crafty redback spider,
Wasn't nowhere to be found.

I rushed into the mrs,
Told her just where I'd been bit.
And she grabbed my cutthroat razor,
And I nearly took a fit.
I said 'Forget what's on your mind,
And call a doctor please.
For I've got a feeling that your cure,
Is worse than the disease.'

There was a redback on the toilet seat,
When I was there last night.
I didn't see him in the dark,
But boy I felt his bite.
And now I'm here in hospital,
A sad and sorry plight.
And I curse the redback spider,
On the toilet seat last night.

I can't lie down, I cant' sit up I don't know what to do.
The nurses think it's funny but that's not my point of view.
I tell you it's embarrasing and that's to say the least,
For I'm too sick to eat a bite,
While the spider had a feast.

And when I get back home again, I'll tell you what I'll do.
I'll make that Redback suffer for the pain I'm going through.
I've had so many needles, I'm looking like a siv.
I promise you that redback hasn't very long to live.

There was a redback on the toilet seat,
When I was there last night.
I didn't see him in the dark,
But boy I felt his bite.
And now I'm here in hospital,
A sad and sorry plight.
And I curse the redback spider,
On the toilet seat last night.

I'm on vacation next week, so I don't know how much I'll be online, so I figured I'd send birthday greetings to my fellow Arians who are also having b-days next week.

Happy Birthday Tasmaniac, Misery, and Grant Wooten! If I get a chance we'll share some sort of virtual libation in the libation thread.

That's a cool word for it. I might start using that. It's the first time for me. I've rarely had the day off for my birthday, so I plan to enjoy. Wifey's working, so the little guy and I will be taking day trips. Luray Caverns, his first trip to Washington DC, and our local Science Center are planned. Maybe Gettysburg...

Thanks, mate!

Only had the one glass of Absinthe. Don't think it's the drink for me! I'm much more at home with whiskey. I did have a couple of the Jim Beam Devil's Cut and that really does pack a punch! Hair of the dog and I'll be hitting the good stuff - Johnnie Walker Blue.

Thanks Tas, glad yours was pretty darn good. Long day today, but we had fun underground. Tomorrow we head to DC, maybe see some of America's version of evil clowns. (I joked to Woot on one of the other threads about the clowns being the Australian Parliament)

Grant Wootton
04-03-2012, 03:02 AM
Terry, you'd not be far wrong mate - the current joke is "What the difference between McDonald's and the Australian Government?" - Answer, nothing, they're both run by red headed clowns !!!!! Enjoy DC (I'm assuming that's a place, not the opposite of AC) ;)

TerryE
04-03-2012, 03:16 AM
Yes, it's Washington, DC, the Capital. Home of the King Clowns of our land.

Grant Wootton
04-03-2012, 05:30 AM
Yeah, but at least your clowns live in a pretty white house - ours live in a glorified hole in the freaking ground.

In the attached photo, the nice building in front that looks like a building is our "old" parliament house .. the thing behind it, with the flagpole sticking out the top and the grass running up the sides is our "new" parliament house.

Okay, so this isn't a birthday greeting, but Grant's picture reminded me of this story.

Back when "It" was first released, I was in college and worked part time at a Pizza Hut restaurant. One of the other cooks was a buddy and she was also dating my brother at the time, we'll call her K--. She was also a King fan and was reading "It", and like most readers was seriously freaked out. (Hey, even I avoided the storm drains as I walked around campus for a while after reading) Anyway, K-- didn't drive, but lived fairly close to the Hut, so every once in a while I'd drive her home. There was a storm drain right, smack dab in front of her apartment building. And being a family friendly restaurant, we had a helium tank and balloons on hand. I was so, so tempted to blow up a bunch, write 'WE ALL FLOAT DOWN HERE', and hang them coming out of that storm drain. But I couldn't bring myself to do it.

Yes you are. Heck, I would have done it to any of you guys!

Ah, those were the days. I also remember first getting "The Books of Blood, Vol. 1" when it was released in paperback in the US and reading it on break at the Hut. Bad idea. I really didn't know what I was in for and "Midnight Meat Train" almost had me puking in the breakroom.
