I've got 121 to Pennsylvania on the way and I'm bargaining with someone on the EP editions of Phantom of the Opera, Haunting of Hell House, and The Monkey's Paw. I told myself I was going to cool it buying books for a while (I'm starting to lose track of everything I've ordered), but I can't seem to help myself.
I am happy to see I'm not the only one who goes to Camelot Books, they have so much to pick from... book porn :o

So, took advantage of 4th of July sale - grabbed The Influence THC, and e-book Deathwalker by Patrick Whelan.

Haven't read either Little or Whelan, so a good chance to get a good deal(s) and get introduced to some new authors.

Also got an email from LibraryThing that I won an e-book. :) Middle Damned by Shane Stilson - Sounded interesting, just waiting for them to email it to me. That's 2 now from LT.

Unfortunately, I had to pass on the 4th of July sale. Heroes by Joe Abercrombie just came out from Sub. Press and I paid off a Lay-A-Away for The Return of the Crimson Guard Esslemont, PS Publishing. So the wallet is a little flat.

The cover Art by Edward Miller is outstanding. The cover art for Heroes by Raymond Swanland, though completely different, is just as compelling. I Love what Subterranean is doing with Joe Abercrombie's titles. I'm really interested in who is going to do the Patrick Rothfuss books. I'm assuming Subterranean will get around to Peter Brett's eventually.

Absolutely lovely copies, MDH! Both Ian C. Esselmont and Steven Erikson are from Winnipeg (where I live). I dig their work, I read Night of Knives, which was decent for a fast read and a first novel, haven't read the rest though. I really want to get some of Sub presses fantasy books, was looking at the Abercrombie books too, but I've been so broke lately though. Might shell out some dough for Silverberg's Majipoor books though.

121 is one I really want to add to my collection one of these days. Preferably in paper, but e-book is fine too - it takes up less space, but doesn't really have the same feel to it - know what I mean?

Also, I too love the look of the Crimson Guard books.

Haven't had many recent purchases myself - waiting for some deals, and trying to save some cash. Plus, have a few pre-orders, and a decent amount of books I have to read still.

That's crazy - I don't think I would spend that kind of cash (whether or not I had it) on something. With all due respect to those who collect whatever it is they collect, but for me I just couldn't justify it. I seriously couldn't think of anything off the top of my head that I would spend that kind of money on as a collectible/showcase type of item.

TJ makes a valid point. I think all of us have had to grapple with the cost of buying our books. I’m frankly astounded at the prices that G.R.R. Martin’s Subterranean Press/Meisha/Merlin books are commanding, especially in this economy. Every collector has to make that call for themselves. I will owe up to laying out about $500.00 (the most I've ever spent on a book) for Savage Tales of Solomon Kane (Limited Edition) Wandering Star, with a truly fantastic Remarque. I’m sure to some folks think I really over paid, but for me, though it was well above what I would consider reasonable, I consider it a great deal for a pretty unique item. I guess all you can do is try to budget and TRY not to go over the cliff!

I agree its incredible to see what lengths some go to collecting. Seeing King fans splash thousands as if its loose change just baffles me. Must be a group of power ball winners out there that happen to like books. Evidently none of these people have children. Between my children, my mortgage, and life's ordinary expenses, there isn't much left and what is left I put into my library. I'm guilty of being envious, no need to lie about it. If there is anything I really detest it is seeing collectors go for multiple copies of the exact same book, to me you are not a collector you are a hoarder and maybe even a scalper.

 I don't get it either. I had two copies of Centipede's 'Salem's Lot so sold one at a fair price (I think the buyer thought it was fair) because I didn't think I needed two copies of something that should be enjoyed by those who want one, too.

Most collectors don't go for multiple copies, unless there is something different about them, like a Remarque or something like that. It's usually resellers or people that purchase the books as a investment that go for multiple copies.

Highbury, would this be what you mean as a scalper? I saw that many people bought multiple copies of Joyland and then sold them for a handsome markup.

Totally agree with that statement. It really is not much different than the people who buy 10 tickets to a concert/sporting event/whatever - use 2 of them, sell the rest for stupid profit. It is more like an investment for future profit. For me, I collected hockey card back before the market got flooded, and even the McFarlane collectible figurines (mostly hockey again). In the McFarlane example, they issue a limited release of each one, and there is an even smaller release of a "special" version (may have different jersey for example). You should see the guys that wait for whatever store to open, and pretty much run to the area to get all the "special" issue ones, just to sit on them and re-sell.

As Highbury said: I am married with a teenage daughter, two cars, mortgage, bills. There are weeks where we are barely getting by. That is why it baffles me how someone is able to drop so much on certain collectibles. Heck, if I had $2500 fall into my hands and the choice came down to a collectible of whatever, or bills, mortgage, loans, etc - the choice is easy (at least for me).

Sorry, for de-railing this thread! :)

The same place actually had a really old 1930? publish date of this huge medical book created by 7 or so doctors - was something like you would use to try and diagnose what is ailing a person at home. Interior was actually in great condition, but the exterior (esp the spine) was really beat up. They were asking $15.00 for it though, otherwise I might have grabbed it. Another one had a complete set of 1930s era books from The Women's Institute - which were small books about dressmaking, etc.

I've meant to post these for awhile. I picked these up at a thrift store the other day. Four books on shamanism and a really unique piece of Japanese Trench Art from WWII. You can't make out the detail in the photo, but there is a fantastically intricate Dragon worked into the shell casing.13189

I haven't read Angel's Game. Is the book bad, or is the S/L just not worth the money?

FWIW, I've watched the Angel's Game prices on eBay, and you can get a copy for $50. I wouldn't pay that much without having read the book, but if I could pick one up at auction for $30 or so I might be interested...

My opinion, Angel's Game isn't as good as The Shadow of the Wind, but then few books are. It's still a great story that i loved and the Sub Press edition is great again.
Also you ought to read his new book - Marina - when it comes out, it's very much in the same vein as The Shadow of the Wind and i didn't want it to end!

I had the opportunity to go to the 49th Annual Friends of the San Francisco Library Big Book Sale this last weekend. I've been to numerous library book sales before, but never one this big. It was held at the Fort Mason Center Festival Pavilion and I was stunned at how many books there were. There were over 75 tables filled with books with boxes to dig through underneath. What was really nice was that they had everything organized by genre and a neat map to guide you to your interests. I knew I was with like-minded individuals when instead of bags to help cart around your books while you looked, they actually provided shopping carts! I was only there for a couple of hours on the one day, though the sale ran from Wednesday through Sunday from 10am-6pm. The prices weren't bad:$2 for paperbacks, $3 for hardcovers; on Sunday everything was a buck. Tons of fun and definitely worth the 3.5 hour drive to get there!

Most everything I picked up were paperbacks, though they did have a fair amount of hardcovers. They even had a small section for collectible books with a copy of Knowing Darkness for sale. I've never seen one in person before. That book is stinking huge!

Anyways below are some of the books I picked up. Mostly stuff I've been meaning to get for years but never seem to get around to! (Yes that includes The Gunslinger;I haven't read a single book in King's Dark Tower series).

RJK1981
10-11-2013, 10:03 AM
Yeah, it sure is. I won't be pre-ordering the Sixty-Five Stirrup Road though. First because I don't have the money (using Maelstrom as my birthday present, lol), 2nd because I am sure how that many authors can make a story that streams between the nine of them, and C because of the publisher. I have one book from Sinister Grin and will likely not purchase another one. Got a paperback copy of Down by Nate Southard, which was a disappointing story (Great start that was ruined with the introduction of something that short of story didn't need at all), but the font size was way too small, and apparently it is that size for their hardcovers as well. Since I don't buy limited editions just to collect for the most part and intend on reading almost all them, I don't want to purchase books that are guaranteed to have a very small font size. I can understand it if the book's length helps the publisher keep costs down, but don't understand it with novellas. I might check out that book eBook format down the road though, but not as a physical book.

Sock Monkey
10-11-2013, 02:31 PM
Nice to know about Sinister Grin. I have yet to purchase anything from them and doubt that I'll get Sixty-Five Stirrup either. I have the same doubts about the story that you do. I'd think that you'd have to have one heck of an editor in control of that project to make it a success. The font size sounds disappointing. That's one of the great things about CD is that the books are very readable: great font, layout, etc.

I'm also not really a fan of the cover art for Stirrup Road either. I will see how well the book is reviewed and then possibly consider getting it as an eBook, but way too early to know yet. I love Keene's writing and have enjoyed Ketchum's writings that I've read so far, but haven't read any of the others yet except Southard who didn't impress me. If he hadn't taken Down in the direction it went I would have been more impressed though and can see that he is a talented writer.

Ahh, the good ol' crazy money stash! :) Mine's pretty much all burned out, so I'll have to add to it somehow. And yeah, lets just hope the wives aren't lurking here as well.... ;)

lol, wish I had a crazy money stash! Oh well, hopefully I will be able to get one sometime soon. Can't really prevent the wife from knowing if I spent crazy money. Luckily I wasn't married yet when CD announced their release of their IT books and art portfolio, lol, no way she'd of been fine with my spending that kinda money! Luckily I was able to justify spending $133 for the newest Maelstrom set of books as my birthday present even though it won't even get here until more than a month after my birthday most likely since they are aiming for mid-Nov. That is fine with me though since I won't be able to dig into them since I'll be doing NaNoWriMo and limiting my reading to science fiction short stories during that time.

The New Scott Lynch book, part of the Locke Lamora series. Lots of back story with this one, similar to GRR Martin as far as having it promised years ago. Subterranean Press is coming out with a limited soon I think. Pure fun Fantasy, not as dark as some, but good in its own way nonetheless. Can't wait to get to it.

First post - long time lurker - yay!!!

Today the mail man delivered my 30th Anniversary Edition of Christine. It looks beautiful albeit a little shorter than I was expecting. It's shorter than most of my regular hardcover books. Regardless - looks amazing and sadly one of a handful of SK books that I've never read.

Got these yesterday with the 50% off sale using a gift certificate:

Little Things eBook
Placeholders eBook
Titanic 2012 eBook
Devil's Night eBook
The Castle of Los Angeles eBook
Turn Down the Lights Trade Hardcover
Dark Advent Signed Limited Edition

And I purchased a gift certificate too, of course. Told my wife if I were still single I'd probably have done an advance at the bank and purchased a lot more in the gift certificate department. Probably at least 1 or 2 $500 certificates, and maybe the $100 I got yesterday too. Wouldn't be responsible spending to do that though, single or otherwise.
