Stephen King says:
"The Five isn't just Robert McCammon's best novel in years; it's his best novel ever. Terrifying, suspenseful, unputdownable, and full of rock and roll energy. It's also uplifting, a book you'll finish feeling better about your world, your friends, and your music. Here's one you'll beg friends to read."

by Robert McCammon

Publisher: Subterranean Press
Publication Date: May 2011
Trade Hardcover (Flat Signed By The Author): $26.95
Deluxe Signed Limited Edition: 274 signed numbered copies, in slipcase, including several color plates not in the trade hardcover ($125)

About the Book:
Subterranean Press is proud to present Robert McCammon's first contemporary novel in nearly two decades, a tale of the hunt and unlikely survival, of the life and soul, set against a supernatural backbeat.

Robert McCammon, author of the popular Matthew Corbett historical thrillers (Speaks the Nightbird, Mister Slaughter), now gives us something new and completely unexpected: The Five, a contemporary novel as vivid, timely, and compelling as anything he has written to date.

The Five tells the story of an eponymous rock band struggling to survive on the margins of the music business. As they move through the American Southwest on what might be their final tour together, the band members come to the attention of a damaged Iraq war veteran, and their lives are changed forever.

The narrative that follows is a riveting account of violence, terror, and pursuit set against a credible, immensely detailed rock and roll backdrop. It is also a moving meditation on loyalty and friendship, on the nature and importance of families—those we are born into and those we create for ourselves—and on the redemptive power of the creative spirit. Written with wit, elegance, and passionate conviction, The Five lays claim to new imaginative territory, and reaffirms McCammon’s position as one of the finest, most unpredictable storytellers of our time.

I am in the process of re discovering McCammon's earlier works and so am looking forward to this one. While I have enjoyed his recent books, his return to a contemporary setting sounds excellent. And with added rock n roll!

Although each new McCammon is an Event (well, to me, at least..) I'm not to enthousiastic -yet- about this book.
Can't explain why not.
Maybe it's the cover, or the rock and roll backdrop...

Best book of the year so far, and definitely the best of McCammon's work to date. My review can be found here (http://kealanpatrick.wordpress.com/2011/06/27/review-the-five-by-robert-mccammon/).

All these positive reviews have convinced me to give this book a read. If I see it anywhere, I'll be sure to pick it up. Would order the flat signed one from CD, but shipping is too much.:(

Didn't CD have a promotion some time ago where they gave free shipping? Hope they do that again.:)

The free shipping is usually for pre-orders of their books.

Just found the email. They had 3 days of free worldwide shipping some months ago. That's something I could use again.:)

I hope you folks enjoy it. A week later and I'm still pondering the book. It was difficult to leave that world behind, a true testament to McCammon's skill as a writer.

Ok, I finished The Five. And yes, the writing was great, the character development was great and yes, that last chapter added a great piece to the whole story, but I just didn't love it like most other people did. I love McCammon's books, but I'm having trouble figuring out exactly why I didn't "love" it. Not sure. I think maybe I just wasn't nuts about the storyline itself, as well written as the story itself was. Oh well.

Great choice. This book is good on so many levels. I thought the last chapter provided almost the perfect wrap up for this tale.

If I remember correctly, the book (the limited) has been sent.
Has anyone received their copy yet? And if so, does it differ much from the trade edition?
(Living in the Netherlands is great, but it has its disadvantages as well...like waiting forever for a new book to arrive..)

Images were posted on DarkTower.org (as you know). For completeness, the limited has three color illustrations, an illustration of the band as endpapers, is bound in leather, and comes in a slipcase. And is signed, of course.

Took advantage of one of the last CD offers to pick up a copy of this, and think it's going to be one of my 'break' books, as I'm currently reading The Dark Tower, so will probably read after The Waste Lands. Music is my passion in life, closely followed by books, so anything that combines the two is huge in my eyes. I'll post up my thoughts after I'm done.

I just got this in from CD last week and should be starting it sometime next week. McCammon has a very special place in my heart, my father and brother and I all read Swan Song and loved it. It really is top five for me when it comes to emotional connections ... I'm excited about this. I know my Dad would have been too. :)

UPS..TNT..Is there a difference?
Often my packages are sent by UPS (from the U.S.) and are delivered here by TNT.
Can't figure it out.
