View Full Version : Twelve Bentley Little Books To Be Published By Cemetery Dance Publications!

"Somewhere further down the Highway of Horror, there's going to be a reappraisal—or rediscovery—of Bentley Little's work. When you think about all the people writing (or trying to write) scary fiction, he's one of the few who sees the genre as a means to an end rather than the end itself. His stories have actual themes! Dig it!"

What a crazy haul of books! I have yet to read a Little book, and in fact just grabbed a pb version of The Revelation at a used book store locally a month ago. I did enjoy the one short I read in CD mag though.

This was the option I have taken, grabed the frist two on offer. It would be good to go the full set at once but hard to come to over Au$700 for sending to Australia. An option that might help is to commit to the full set of books but defer the postage till they are ready to send.

If this is successful, will the remaining titles be picked up for the same limited treatment?

That would be awesome, but I expect with so many Little books now in the pipeline, it would be a good while before more would be considered. Then again, I have been wrong several times today.

I went with the limited edition bundle. It is a sizeable chunk of change, but there was only two of the books that I was indifferent about so it seemed like a heck of a deal. Though it did wreck my book budget! I am surprised that The Store isn't included, but The Burning is. It also looks like the lettered editions the first two books are sold out so congratulations!

Sock Monkey
01-28-2014, 04:32 AM
Hmmm...I was just looking at the editions tab for the first two books and it doesn't have the lettered editions listed anymore. Was I wrong and the lettered editions are not sold out, but rather not being published?

I haven't read it but it seems to be one of the more well loved Little books. Maybe it's being saved for a special Anniversary edition down the line. Very excited about this announcement though. So happy I've been saving gift certificates or there would have been no way I could have afforded the bundle.

Oops, missed the questions about this! After looking at our Lettered Edition workload for 2014, 2015, and 2016, we decided not to add 10 more titles at this point. We can always offer and sell the Lettered Editions down the road when we're more caught-up on the rest!

The Editions tab on the page for the Summoning just says signed.

True, which led me to believe that these books would not be individually numbered, but The Influence says the same thing as The Summoning on its edition tab and that was individually numbered. It would be awesome if these books were numbered and numbers could be matched. I would love to have all of these to have the same number as my edition of The Influence.

Brian James Freeman

The Influence wasn't meant to be individually numbered, that was a mistake that slipped through production. The new books will not be individually numbered.

Brian James Freeman
08-22-2014, 02:35 AM
I noticed on the Production Update page the reslease for the first two titles have been pushed back by a couple of months each.

Yeah, we didn't get a chance to send out the official update yet, but I wanted to get the change noted on there as soon as I was sure things had indeed changed. We had some marketing opportunities come up that required the launch to slide back to October, and it was decided that the delay was worth it if we could reach a much larger than expected audience with our marketing and advertising. Basically, we're working with our distributors to reach booksellers and libraries, so it's nothing that general readers will notice, but it could make a big difference in terms of sales for the books to the trade market. But the books have to be "forthcoming releases" to qualify, so the dates had to move a bit. We'll see what happens!

I really like that cover art.

I recently read The Mailman I found in first edition HC at a local used shop - was my first book length Little, and I really enjoyed it. He certainly isn't in the mainstream author category I gather, as you hardly ever see his books in a retailer like Chapters, and finding his titles in the used market (at least locally) is rare.

I'm not THAT ambitious! I was thinking matching the previously published Little books and then matching The Influence and the Consultant. The Mailman I would let be as stand alone (unless CD publishes another oversized slipcased Little book...)

Interesting to note that both "The Influence" and "The Revelation" signed limiteds are sold out while "The Summoning" is still avaliable.

Interesting to note that both "The Influence" and "The Revelation" signed limiteds are sold out while "The Summoning" is still avaliable.

Maybe some people who have the first don't have the second, could reduce the amount of matched number sets.

I received 'The Revelation' in a grab bag so I am sure that helped it sell out.

Two other factors are that The Influence is a new book and not a reprint of an older title, and The Revelation was in-stock where The Summoning is still forthcoming.

Yeah, we're working with our distributor to try to get better placement for the backlist titles, so everything is a bit fluid with them right now. Hopefully, whatever we can accomplish in that regard will be in place by 2016 and then we can move forward on a schedule.

I was actually going to ask that specific question.

It's cool to have them all in a the Graveyard line, especially for me since I only ordered on of his books from the 12 book collection, but it does suck a little bit to not have the whole set as one uniform look for those that ordered the whole package.

I guess the only book in the 12 that'll be out of sync with the rest is Revelation. The rest of the 12 (with the exception of The Mailman since that was just a THC) will be in the Graveyard line. Obviously The Consultant and The Influence don't match either, but they weren't part of that bundle. Plus we're adding more titles from Bentley's back catalog as they become available. One of which will be going up as an eBook probably tomorrow.

As of right now that is the plan for Bentley Little limited editions. As far as Graveyard being exlusively Bentley Little that's not the case at all. As I said above the Little stuff is spaced out so that we can fit Graveyard titles from other authors in between. In fact book 2 of the GYEs is currently at the printer and I believe will be done in December even though it's currently an unannounced title.

No problems. The limited editions for those 12 Bentley Little books have been moved to our "Graveyard Editions" series. Which kinda messed with the release dates. I'm not really sure were it falls in the new release schedule for that series. I'll check when I get in the office tomorrow though, or if Brian sees this he may know off hand.

So Bentley will have 12 books in the series?

Eventually. Not all in a row. They are spaced out around the other 20 titles we already have under contract for the series.

I think we sent an update about this a while back, but for anyone preordered the "bundle" of all of these Little Limited Editions who doesn't dig the style of the series OR just wants to cancel because it's going to be 4 to 5 more years to get them as the Graveyard Editions progress, you can just drop Mindy a line to cancel your bundle order. We'll totally understand.

Part of what we learned with Bentley's collectors is they don't see the need to upgrade to the "signed" edition if there's a trade edition.

So by putting these books in the Graveyard Editions line, they have a different look from the trades and appeal to a larger group of horror book collectors, which seems to be making people happy.

Thanks, Brian. I'm not a reader/collector of Bentley per se so I wasn't a part of his twelve book campaign. I was one of the people who ordered the Bentley Little books when they were first announced. I am not a fan of the look of the graveyard books. I ended up canceling my order partly because of that and a bigger part was the fact I had already started collecting the books with the dust jackets that were originally going to be a part of it and I wanted a uniform look . I understand the reasoning behind it but it wasn't for me. So I got my refund and am collecting the paperback editions from Cemetery Dance. Just one of my book collecting quirks . We all have them.

I haven't decided yet if I'm going to collect all the Bentley Little Graveyard books or not...the first one was easy, given that it was an original/new novel, but some of the pbos they're reprinting are not among my favorites (e.g. THE WALKING is, I believe, next or will be shortly, and it's definitely not one of his best) while others surely are. So do I just pick up the ones I like, or do I go the completist route and get them all? Tough call.

I do know, though, that I'm not collecting the Graveyard series in its entirety. They're nice, but not really my thing, and some of the authors aren't of interest (in fact, two of the three thus far are not), so I'll just pick and choose as it goes along (again, except for Little...maybe).

Technically all of the paperbacks of the 12 Bentley Little books mention in the beginning of this post are available at the moment if you purchase them through Amazon. I think we have 4 more that need announced and put for sale through the CD site. The Collection, The Policy, The Association, and The Ignored.

I think The Collection and The Policy are good to go for a "In-Stock" announcement. The Association and The Ignored shouldn't be far behind.

These aren't part of the original 12, but there are paperbacks for The Influence, The Handyman, The Consultant, and Death Instinct coming as well.

As with everything we publish it's really gonna vary book to book based off of personal taste. We have a ton of unannounced titles lined up for the Graveyard Editions series and we don't expect everyone to like or even want every title. I actually think calling it a series is probably the wrong term for it. A better description would be "line" as the aren't numbered like the Novella series and the signature series.

Probably another reason I don't feel a need to collect the Graveyard books...as Dan mentions, it doesn't have the feel of a series (e.g. the CD Novella series), so without that commonality, that unifying vibe, it's easy to just pick and choose and call it a day.

I LOVE the look of the Graveyard Editions. I wouldn't want all my books to look that way, but a few here and there would be nice. I considered being a passive-aggressive a-hole and buying all the GE's that weren't Bentley Little books. Just to be that guy. But then my budget told me I don't have enough money to be an a-hole. I bought Orphans and haven't read it yet. But I do like looking at it.

I’ve been meaning to pick up both Malfi books as I’ve heard good things along with the Cutter book (I rather liked The Troop), Ghosts by Tremblay is a given (so good, happy to have an excuse to revisit it) and I recently finished Disappearance at Devil’s Rock (liked but did not love).

I’m love the Graveyard Editions so I’m happy to hear the line is going to have a pretty long life.

Just recently read The Troop and really liked it as well. Looking forward to more from Cutter. A Head Full of Ghosts is the only one among this list I have already read, technically listened to it as it was on Audible, so I look forward to having a physical copy.
