You may have seen my covers for KILL WHITEY and SHADES that Dan Hocker posted recently on the Brian Keene thread. Here's a blog post (http://kealanpatrick.wordpress.com/2013/04/02/book-cover-designs/) which features a few more of them for anyone interested.

Most unusual for a writer to also do his covers. All of them are pretty solid, especially like "Their Last Dying Acts" something about it really strikes me.

Wow Kealan, I never realized there was so much I hadn't read of yours. I'm amazed. Are you going to edit any anthologies this year?

Thanks! That's one of my favorites too. I got into doing these once the digital revolution hit, quite frankly because the cost of hiring someone to do the editing, formatting, layout, and cover design was prohibitive. Plus, I like a challenge, and if I can learn to do something myself, that will always be preferable to me than outsourcing. Gives me a measure of control I wouldn't otherwise have.

No plans to edit any anthologies this year, Randy. I simply don't have the time, and although I'd always love to do another one, they're just not an easy sell anymore (not that they ever really were.)

They're all quite good, but I really dig Night Show and Kill Whitey, very sexy. Their Last Dying Act especially stands out too.

I've noticed there are never any KPB titles at Half price Books whenever I go. I guess the books are just so awesome that people can't bring themselves to give them up!

Awesome! Why isn't your name on the CD website for the striking The Influence cover?

Credit in the book's interior is enough for me :)

Kealan - I have a question for you.

Aside from your own novels - when you are designing a cover for a book, how do you figure out what kind of drawings, pictures, etc. are going to go on the cover? Do you have to read a transcript, or a summary of the story/characters? Is it something you collaborate with the author or editor? When do you go to an artist like Caruso, etc.?

TJ: I use stock art or in-house photography only. I don't hire artists. If I can't do the composite myself, I pass on the project. So far this has only happened once, with a science fiction cover that needed an illustrator, not a graphic designer (this is why I don't do SF covers). Usually the author will give me the concept they have in mind, in addition to a synopsis. If either of those is not enough, I'll read some of the book to get a feel for the tone, etc.

Very interesting - I was always curious if certain that featured a person for example, was as you said "in-house photography", or public domain type images. Like the Kill Whitey cover, or the cover for the one Gonzalez title where the guy is sitting on a chair. Those are everyday looking people. Or even ones where this a house or building....

Thanks - it was something I always thought about.

I had no idea he did the cover for The Influence - it is simple, but very good.

I am curious to see what else he has in store for us Brian.

TJ: My girlfriend is a professional photographer, and she specializes in dark images, so if we can get the shot ourselves we will. For example, the guy in the chair on JF's cover is me, and we shot that at Mansfield Reformatory, (i.e. Shawshank) ;)

Wow - my uncle took his family there earlier this year - said it was a really cool place to check out. Not that far from here either, wouldn't mind to check it out myself.

Have a possible Columbus trip coming up at end of October - maybe

Also - another simple, yet very effective cover for Offline.
