Hey all,

For the e-readers among you, my short story "Offline", about the Catfish-like dangers of online interaction, is now available free at Smashwords. Hopefully Amazon and all other vendors will price-match soon, but until then, here is the link to the free ebook at Smashwords (https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/83895).

Downloaded and finished reading it. Really creep me out. And very relevant in today's internet-powered society. Once you put your profile out there on one of the social network you are opening up to everybody and you don't even now if they are really who they say they are. All of them protected by a layer of screen monitor. The most effective weapon for predators.

Hi Kealan. How's your day so far? I just finished reading OFFLINE with my nine year old grandson and we were both blown away. Well done my friend. I write these kinds of stories myself and was pretty sure I knew how it was going to end, but to see the look on my Grandson's face was as they say, priceless. You now have yet another huge fan to add to your following. 2 counting me of course. Thank you for the freebie Kealan. I'll send you one of my tales one day, just let me know when you have enough time for a good read. Still in active pursuit of the spooky-spooky. Back to work on the warlock story, then the rat story then the minotaur story. My head is swimming with them.

Thank you sir! Amazon like to take their time with this stuff, particularly as they seem to be discouraging free books. It might help if you clicked the "Tell Us About A Lower Price" link on the book's page. The more people who do that, the more likely it is that Amazon will price-match.

Kealan - I have to say, this was simply a fantastic short read. I might make my daughter read it. She is 14 and addicted to the whole online thing, and entering high school in September. I really loved this. I have to pick up some of your books in PB now.

I agree I read it yesterday and gave it 5 stars on GR. One of the most original stories I have read in quite some time.

Thanks TJ! And she might be the perfect audience for this story. It's certainly a cautionary tale and not nearly as far-fetched in today's technologically inclined society as I wish it were.

You are very right, and in fact the timing is right on. She has had some issues with some kids at school thanks to Facebook.

Well, if you do decide to let her read it, you can preface it by telling her that I was inspired to write it by a news article about a forty-year old disabled man in Mexico who figured out how to hack people's webcams and watch them through them. He would then email them and refer to the things he had seen them do. It was creepy, and hard to believe it anything but an urban legend.

Yeah, it really creeped me out. Plus I see fake profiles on FB all the time, primarily used either to help an author/artist promote his/herself, or to troll and bully people. After reading the article about the webcam guy, I decided to do my own take on the whole fake profile thing.
