Books and magazines are my passion: especially Stephen King books and movie/monster (so-called) magazines. Famous Monsters of Filmland started it all -in 1958- and it and many others is/are still growing strong.

Monsters From the Vault is one of my favorites. It specializes in older horror movies, you know, the ones with Boris Karloff and Bela Lugoso, but within its pages is so much more to admire. Contentwise it's hard to beat: amazingly insightful articles on movies you thought you knew everything about - but didn't, and the lay-out is simply awesome.

Incredible: MFtV is a one-man show. I mean, many people are responsible for writing the articles, but it's all put together and published -twice a year- by one person, Jim Clatterbaugh, one of the kindest, most generous people I've ever had the pleasure to do business with.

I was lucky to collect a complete run: 28 regular issues so far, and counting - # 29 will be out this coming July, plus one special edition.

Anyone even remotely interested in the golden age of horror movies, plus some quality writing and visuals, do get a subscription - you won't regret it.

(Haha, and no, Jim didn't put me up to this.....)

Book-wise, I'm a King fan-atic and I collect as many hardcover editions as I am able to get hold of - in as many languages.
Limited editons are my pride and joy - thanks especially to Donald M. grant and Cemetery Dance.
I'd like to mention Mindy here. As I live in Europe, I'm far removed from the hub of things, but Mindy has been an awesome contact, always there for me, always responding promptly, always helping out as much as she can.
THANK YOU, Mindy!
And, CD, whenever Mindy asks for a raise - give her one; she's worth it!!

OK -here are my CD and Lonely Road Books.

Growing up in the Netherlands during the sixties and seventies I was lucky to catch many of the Hammer horrorfilms upon release. Many here I think have never even heard of the British based Hammer studio, but in the late fifties they started a sort of horror revival, re-making many of the old Universal films, with their own particular slant: in color, sprinkled with a dose of sex and violence. The problem in my country was, these films were either rated 14 and over, or 18 and over. As I was in my early teens I was not allowed to watch the good ones, like Dracula, Prince of Darkness. Well, of course I sneaked in anyways and watched my first R-rated horror movie ever.
Hammer to me means Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. Lee's Dracula and Cushing's Frankenstein (not the creature) and van Helsing are unsurpassed. Hammer also means Little Shoppe of Horrors - a fanzine (almost) completely devoted to the classic Hammerfilms. Issue # 4 was the first I ever bought, way back in the seventies and the magazine is still going strong. In the past we sometimes had to wait years for the next issue to come out, recently Dick Klemensen (the man behind responsible for each and every issue) has upped the publishing schedule to two issues per year. Coming up in October is the long awaited Fearless Vampires (or, Dance of the vampires) issue. not a Hammer flick, but Polanski's classic vampire opus. Can't wait.
For those here interested, I've got a complete collection. the first two issues are reprints, the rest originals.

sorry about the flash....

If you don't already have them, I have a few suggestions for you.

Cinema 57 La Fantastique, according to Fory this is the first horror mag.
The House that Hammer Built http://cgi.ebay.com/House-Hammer-Built-11-/130522906289?pt=Magazines&hash=item1e63c57eb1#ht_500wt_1156
Dark Terrors

And there was a Hammer Horror Film Omnibus book, and a 2nd.

I too, have a great love for Hammer films and to a lesser extent Amicus.

frik51
05-24-2011, 07:59 AM
Thanks for the info: appreciated!
Amicus I find so-so, Hammer was much better.
The classic Hammer films are some of the best horror-movies ever: Brides of Dracula, The Mummy, Horror of Dracula, etc. Not scary at all, but just beautiful to look at.

Time to post some more books. Stephen Donaldson is an author I discovered way back in the seventies. His Thomas Covenant Chronicles blew me away and I've been a fan since. I love the fact he's working on his Final chronicles, which I'm not reading yet, but saving up till 2013, when this series will be complete. His fantasy is awesome, but I also love his Science Fiction series, The Gap.
Intense stuff!

PS publishing (which is the UK retailer) standardly carries gift / trades and limited editions (including numbered editions). Also if you request something from him I think he can request from us. Not 100% sure on that though.

But take, for instance, the numered IT. This book could only be ordered through the CD website and once the order is taken (postage included) PS publishing is out, right?
So we're only talking about numbered/lettered editions currently in stock?

I think we still let retailers have a very very very limited quantity. Retailers are different than distributors though, so you'll never see a legit copy of a limited edition of IT on amazon, unless someone is selling their personal copy through there. Your best bet if you're looking for a closer shipping is to contact PS publishing and see if they can get you a copy, it can't hurt to try right?

Frik,

The sets i am extremely jealous of are those Thomas Covenant Volumes! I have paperbacks that I have read and reread and reread--of course, I have the 3 current vols (and waiting for #4)! But the whole collection is great (and like me, you probably have a ton of more you could show!)

Another series I anxiously awaiting the next book in is Barker's Abarat series. Do you have any LEs English or otherwise of those?

bsaenz24
06-12-2011, 06:57 PM
(trying not to intrude on the thread, Sorry Frik)....

srboone, I had the limiteds of the first two Abarat books, but sold them. I had the 1 of 50 copy ones that had an original drawing. The thing that annoyed me about those books were the pages/artwork were the exact same physical pages as the plaoin trade hardback. Litterally the same. The binding was nice, but I didn't care for the guts of the book being the plain ole book.

Well, as I noted else where, I'm not really a collector. The value of a book in the market place is all theoretical, until you find someone to pay that much for it. I learned that from my comic book sharp days. The most valueable book I have (from my perpective) is a beat up 1960's HC edition of Hardy Boys#41 "The Clue of the Screeching Owl"--market place value, almost zero, but priceless to me because it was the first "book" I ever read by myself--My kindergarten teacher was suprised when I brought it school one day and actually read her a paragraph out of it. It's one of the last books I would ever consider getting rid of.

That it is.
Therefore, I'm ashamed to admit I do not have my copy displayed at all.

Just got my confirmation: the lettered edition is on its way!!
The only problem is: I won't be home for another three weeks....Now hopefully, our Dutch custom officials are even more slow than they usually are and will hold on it till I'm back.
Ouch - sometimes I get a form in the mail in which I have to state the value of the book. (which is kinda stupid, as CD always clearly states its value...). When I'm not home I can't return this form....and the book might be returned to the US.

I don't have nearly enough room. I have 3 bookcases, 2 of which are devoted to King, Gaiman, and Bradbury and some other limited/special editions and there are books in front of books on those. All the rest, God probably 20 boxes, are relegated to storage in the basement right now. I swear that my next house will have a library, so everything can be seen.

I LOVE comics. I don't really have a huge collection, but what I've got, I treasure.
Way back in the sixties/seventies I discovered my comics passion: Warren's Creepy, Eerie and Vampirella. Living in the Netherlands at the time, these magazines didn't come cheap. I usually spent all of my allowance on these things - on top of that, my fix of Famous Monsters of Filmland.
I had almost complete collections of these titles. Till I threw them all out - the comics, that is, not FM. But that's another story.

Recently Dark Horse started the Creepy and Eerie Archives, and Dynamite is doing the Vampirella Archives - awesome. Not only can I finally find out what I missed, years ago, but I can rectify my mistake and buy these amazing issues all over again - this time collected in gorgeous HC editions.

I have no idea how well these collections are selling. 146 Issues of Creepy have been published, which would come to about 29 Dark Horse collections. 139 Eerie issues would total some 28 HCs, plus 112 issues of Vampirella...19 collections?
That's an awful lot of books. I can just picture them on my bookshelves though...

So far, so good......

Finally!
This book was stuck in Dutch customs for weeks. Which I just do not understand at all.
The journey from the US to my country doesn't take more than a couple of days. But in order to pass customs, I have to fill out a form, because they seem to be unable to determine the contents of the package, plus its value. So, that what I have to provide. If this isn't done within 30 days, the package is either returned to sender or destroyed. Now what I don't understand is Cemetery Dance always encloses a form, stating the contents of the package (BOOK) plus its value. Now why do I have to tell them all over again?

Anyways, here it is, The Secretary of Dreams II, lettered edition:

True - but I wish they would. It would cut my wait in half, at least.
Plus, on the outside of the package CD's form can be found, stating contents plus value.
I'm sure they have a look at this. So why do I have to give the information they already have?
I just don't get it.

Did I mention the fact that I love comics? Guess I did. Love my Creepy, Eerie and Vampirella collections, but of course, there's more. Now, I'm not a hardcore collector (comics wise), and my collection is rather limited, but I thought I'd share anyways.
Of course, there are the King adaptations. To me, they don't read as King as, obviously, he didn't write them, except for the first American Vampire volume. Enjoyable, but most most definitely not essential reading.

First there were the Disney Donald Duck comics. These were weekly's and first appeared in 1952 - and are still going strong. I missed out on the first couple of years, but fortunately they have been reprinted in gorgeous collections. Unfortunately, the 1959 set was the last one, as they got too expensive and sales were declining.

As I posted elsewhere, I've got more than 20 limited (and not so limited) books on pre-order, plus countless blu-ray sets. It's getting a bit too much.
So, I decided to cancel the non-essentials, like the DT set (which I'm sure I'll buy one day), and even the upcoming Star Wars BD set. I even didn't buy the Lord of the Rings BD set - yet.

My pleasure.

Now, I don't think I posted any issues of FM (Famous Monsters of Filmland) yet. Another addiction I acquired decades ago. FM was first published in 1958 and was only available in the US and the UK (I believe). I discovered my first issue (#50) some ten years later, of all places, in my home town in the Netherlands. Lightning strukck and I have bought each and every issue since.
Fast forward half a century or so, FM (3.0 by now) is still around and issue #258 is about to be published.
Don't worry, I won't post the hundreds of issues I've got (yet....:) ) - just the last couple of issues. New trend: variant covers. Nice, but expensive.

I was kinda disappointed with this Donaldson limited. I mean, I ordered both editions, the trade plus the S/L edition, but the books are almost identical. Even the ISBN is the same, as are the dustjackets.
The only difference is the binding -the actual cover of the book- and the signature page.
Sigh.....

But some nice items, Siep. I don't have any hardcover Donaldson, but I passed on the volume, because it was SP.:(

Those Eerie and Creepy covers take me back to my misspent youth - ah, the nostalgia :)

I missed out on the first couple of years - they only became available here around '72/'73. I never missed an issue. During the mid-eighties I thought it was a good idea to get rid of my collection. Don't ask.
I'm glad Dark Horse is reprinting them - these archives look almost as good as the originals.

I've still got about six more SP editions coming....

Great additions, although a shame the SP limiteds aren't a bit more different than the trades. I do like sub presses trade editions though.

I think I do too -the upcoming A Dance With Dragons, for instance, looks awesome (hope I'll be able to order a copy soon), same for McCammon's Baal.
Still, I was not too impressed with what I posted above. As I said, nice books, but not what I expected from a S/L.

The main focus of my collection lies on hardcover editions from any country I can get hold of, plus signed/limited editions. King's my number one author (collecting-wise) and my King collection just flowed over into bookcase #5. First printings are nice, but not a must at all.

One of my favorite (contents-wise) Kingbooks ever, from the U.S.
I simply can't understand why so many readers seem to be unabl;e to finish it, or find it boring.
Maybe because King and I have grown up, sharing the same books, movies etc. I can really relate to what he's saying.
