Well, here we go! Due to popular demand (and to hush the voices:)) I present to you fellow forum members my humble collection thread. Before someone else says it, I'll say it: finally! :)

Anyway, a brief intro before I begin. I used to have many, many more books. Encyclopedia sets, civil war books (and other history sets), some nice hardcovers of great classics in literature, and a wide assortment of fiction. When I moved to Europe from NJ some years ago, all of that went to charity. Only a few boxes came with me. But I've been slowly rebuilding the collection over the years. First I started with PB's (you'll see a fair share of those here), but then I decided that I want to gather a nice library so I started buying more HC's. One book at a time is what I tell myself. And over the years the collection will grow.

Then I found CD while working on replacing my King collection of PB's with HC's. Then this forum was set up some time later. And the rest is histroy! :)

I love that FDNS S/L ,i sold mine and now regret it :(

That's a shame Tom. Selling stuff is hard, that's why I plan on not having to part with another of my books again. If I have a double or something like that, then it's ok.

Teriw
04-06-2012, 08:48 PM
Next time theres a new king s/l I might buy 2 and sell one later. Why can't I collect and make my money back as well.

peteOcha
04-06-2012, 08:50 PM
But that would set you back cashwise quite a bit. Taking you away from your goal of getting a house. Plus the ideal situation would be to hold on to that second copy for a bit so the value could increase.

Teriw
04-06-2012, 09:01 PM
Well if I sold the second one I'd likely break even. Thats the point. Soon as a King SL is sold out it almost doubles. Look at IT, I've seen it go for 1200 ONCE, that one was retarded. but In general $600-$800, which had I bought two woulda made me my money back. Depends on the book too though. gotta weigh your options because some like 11.22.63 are only going for about $200.

peteOcha
04-06-2012, 09:08 PM
Yup, that's why its ideal to wait a bit for selling in my opinion. Sure, there's some buyers that missed out and pay double, but early on there's many more copies being sold than later down the road. Just think of it as an investment. Although I don't really think about books like that. sure, I see them as something that one day might help me or my children financially, if such a need arose, but that's not why i buy them. The reason for buying is plain and simple: I love books! :)

Teriw
04-06-2012, 09:14 PM
Oh I know, but the copy I keep will be the one I sell later when its worth alot. My collection will be my collection until I need to retire, then it will be sold.

Yeah, that's right. I think you paid $25 for yours? But I ordered later (I think Siep did too) and paid $14. :) But thanks again! I don't know if I would buy them for the $50-60 B&N wanted for them, but if they had a sale where the next installments were for $25 I'd get them. :)

Very nice collections, Pete. I lost interest in FF somewhere after 8...played alittle of 10, but never finished.

FF8 was the one with that stoopid card collectible card game that was sooooooooooaddicting, I think (along with my favorite FF character, Irvine)....FF7 was a masterwork, of course.

I have to go look at it this weekend, but it's only supposed to be 10' x 5', which would probably only be enough room for the comic collection. She really wants me to get rid of everything, but that's not happening. I will admit that we need to make room, and change the basement from almost all storage to a playroom/family room, but I'm not getting disposing of my books. I truly plan for my next house to have a devoted library with nothing but shelves on all 4 walls. And I really could fill it up pretty well, already.

peteOcha
04-11-2012, 03:55 PM
My dream would be to have an entire room devoted to books, with a desk for writing and a comfortable recliner chair for reading...

Is she just not into books like you are? Or is she just trying to keep you from taking over every room in the house?

TerryE
04-11-2012, 04:43 PM
Mostly that she's not into books (at all) and I have taken over the basement. It's half finished/half storage and we need to clear stuff out of the finished half, put it in back room (which is quite full of my books, I admit) and have a place for the little guy to have the Wii set up and a good play area. The shelves with the good stuff will stay though. I've been good about not taking over the rest of the house.

gotta weigh your options because some like 11.22.63 are only going for about $200.

I think the reason that one is selling for so low is because the signature is a facsimile unlike the CD signed books of his, though I could be wrong

I've got a whole bunch of titles on preorder as well. I'm guessing maybe 15 or so.:)

Do you keep a list of titles you have on order? Once I started buying several books I decided it'd probably be a good idea to add a new table to Access database of books I keep. I put all of my preorders and usually put my book orders from the secondary market on it (have forgotten to do that a couple times though). Helps me in making sure I know what books I am waiting on. Right now my list has 27 books that I'm waiting on. 3 of those are waiting at the post office for me to pick up tomorrow, 2 are Lonely Road titles, and the rest are CD preorders. It also doesn't include what I'll get from the current grab bag or the last 2 books from the forthcoming grab bag that still are unknown.

If I didn't have my database I'd have a hard time remembering exactly what I had on order

peteOcha
04-17-2012, 07:12 AM

srboone
04-18-2012, 01:31 PM
The total is a whopping 80 books! (and 1 art piece). But 19 of those books are the remaining books in the Master & Commander series from Easton; and 34 more are scheduled to arrive in the very near future (26 from PS, 4 each from Nightshade and CD). That leaves only 27 really. I think there's a ball cap for the CDCC that's still coming (?) and the Chadbourne-Carrie print. Bu tthat's still way too many--oh and I'm planning on bidding on several of the Kelly auction items...

I didn't even realize it was that big (an honestly, I added the M&C books from Easton simply to jack up the total;these are paid for on a month-to-month basis and I can freeze the contract at any time.) It was the PS Grab bag put it out of control. It was an opportunity to get some books from authors that I would ordinarily pass up--maybe I'll even read one or two of them.
