"(Brett McBean) lures us in and settles us into a story that is not designed to make us scream and hide under the covers, but one that lingers after we're done reading it and haunts us. (The Awakening) has a heartbeat and a grip that pulls you in and keeps you from getting away."
-- Ray Garton, from his introduction.

For as long as he can remember, fourteen-year-old Toby Fairchild has been afraid of the strange old man living across the street. Along with the rest of the kids in the small Midwestern town of Belford, he sees the reclusive Mr. Joseph as the local bogeyman.

Mr. Joseph's life is an unhappy one. The memories of his past fill him with deep sorrow, and the kids of Belford have long been afraid of him, what with his unusual features and awkward gait.

However, when Toby accidentally discovers the remarkable truth about Mr. Joseph, an unlikely friendship develops. Over the course of the summer, Toby will come to know about pain and death; loss and the meaning of freedom, as Mr. Joseph recounts the incredible story of his past back in Haiti. A story laced with voodoo spirits, slave plantations, evil sorcerers…and zombis.

Toby will learn that monsters do exist – though not always where you expect to find them.

Cheers, Grant!

Yeah, Erin did a wonderful job on this. As well as the wraparound dust jacket there's ten internal illustrations, endpapers, signature sheet and foil stamp design to salivate over!

Steve, will CD be distributing the books (USA/Canada) bought directly from Tasmaniac?

(Based upon the past, if they left the printer on the second, we would have had them in our homes by now. )

Hey Jan,

Tasmaniac are distributing to our customers (of which you are one :) ) but because there was dust jacket damage during transit from the printer to our distributor we are awaiting replacements (was told this morning they are printing them as we speak!). Shouldn't be too far away!

I should add that the fine, upstanding people at Cemetery Dance agreed to take a limited amount of copies to sell on their Other Publisher's Books page.

Whew - glad the distribution system hasn't changed. ;)

Bummer about the DJs - but thanks again for making sure we get another high-quality book. Looking fwd to both Brett's novel and his third JUNGLE novella.

Direct from Tasmaniac. Since Paul/Thunderstorm Books distributes these to USA/Canada, we pay low (sometimes no) shipping costs . . . . and we usually get to fondle them before Steve/Tasmaniac gets his copy.

The Awakening is now being classed as a pre-publication sell out. The following book dealers have been allocated a limited amount of copies: Cemetery Dance, BadMoon Books, Camelot Books, Jeff'n'Joys Quality Books (UK) and Ellison Hawker (AUS). If you want to pre-order a copy, try those dealers. Steve.

Hmmm . . . seems like the handling of this is a little strange. Did CD get any copies of this?

Yeah. I was bummed that Mindy had to cancel my order, but everything was handled perfectly like always. Thanks for the heads up on this one Dan.

Yea it's a bit of a complicated mess on our end. Starting with one of the boxes that where shipped to us going missing in transit, or something like that I can't remember completely.

I was bummed too, but the situation wasn't CD's fault, so nothing that could be helped.

Okay, so here's what happened:
90 copies were supposed to ship to Cemetery Dance - 6 cartons in total. Printer sent me confirmation via UPS. Cemetery Dance signed for 5 cartons, leaving 1 carton unaccounted for. Printer has no idea where it is and cannot get an explanation from UPS.

So I'm compensated $3.90 a copy (funny that I haven't received that yet) and 10 Cemetery Dance customers are disappointed.

Keep an eye out on E-bay 'cause there are 10 copies floating around out there.
